Santa anas are ripping and a fire broke out earlier today. With 70mph gusts, the fire's now grown to 10,000 acres tonight. Aircraft grounded due to the winds...Ventura county with towns of Santa Paula and Filmore under fire, Ojai and points toward the coast (like Carpenteria) in the line of fire. 1 death, many houses burned (can't get a number tonight) and evacs all over the place down there.
Might want to keep them in your prayers tonight. Winds aren't due to let up until tomorrow.

my brother is travelling down on HWY 101 past Ventura to get to his mother in law's home so am trying to figure out if it's passable. Found a map from UCSB of the Thomas fire and it looks to me like the fire has crossed over the highway, that's when I zoom way in.
Tellin ya I got all teared up seeing this destruction there.
Thanks for your great reporting Redhart, I've been on the Thomas fire twitter feed and it's so slow from all the hundreds of tweets, can barely navigate it.
Anyway, at the link you have to zoom way out and/or move the map to see where the fire map is in Ventura.

thanks for the map--good map. I'd say it's going to be rough going trying to get through the 101 through Ventura area. Even if open (I would check the CHP link). I don't see hard closures on 101, but I do on 150, and reports of fire from N I-5 through Newhall (Creek fire).
Even if open, it's going to be nasty going with evacuees... lots of reports of heavy traffic and changing conditions. Road could be open when you leave, but closed when you get there.
Good luck to your brother.

I'm seeing a lot of reports that this fire is now closing in on Ojai (to the northeast of Ventura) from the east. "Shelf Road" is reported now being affected by the fire. The photo above is reported to be from Shelf Rd. in Ojai.
If you have friends and family in Ojai, might be a good time to check on them and encourage them to leave and follow evac orders if needed.
Winds here 60mi to the ne of this fire at my house have started to increase tonight as per forcasted. A lot of us were hoping the weather guys would be wrong this time, but seems we can't catch a break.

Use caution on U/S 101 between Ventura and Santa Barbara. Fire is burning on both sides of the highway. Expect intermittent closures and/or CHP escorts through the area. #ThomasFire #sheriffvc

It looks like there has been a body found..
"Overnight, a body was also found by the site of a vehicle accident near Wheeler Canyon, close to the Thomas Fire's burn area, authorities said Thursday.
"The cause of death has not been determined," said Senior Deputy Tim Lohman with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. "It appears it might have been a vehicle accident.""

ARPINTERIA, Calif. - [Update Thursday 2:12 p.m. PST]
Fire officials held an impromptu press conference in Faria Beach Thursday afternoon. In it they confirmed a palm tree farm, often a well-known site for travelers up and down the coast, burned down in Thursday's fire flare-up.
The Thomas Fire came dangerously close to homes but firefighters were able to prevent any homes from burning up after an hour's firefight.
The Thomas Fire stands at 96,000 acres and is 5 percent contained, although those numbers are expected to change. Over 2,500 firefighters from different states are battling the blaze. At least 50,000 people have been evacuated and 15,000 structures remain threatened.
Ventura County Fire Capt. Rich Macklin said that if the predicted winds materialize later this evening, this fire will cross into Santa Barbara County and the community of Carpinteria will be heavily impacted.

The #Thomasfire has destroyed 427 structures and burned 115,000 acres.(abc news)
Other word has it that it's now moved away from the Fillmore area and into areas.
It has been moving north into wildlands...the caution part is it's still seems to be attempting to flank Santa Barbara area from the east.
If the winds cooperate tonight and tomorrow, perhaps they can at least push it into less dangerous area and make headway.

new figures: 132,000 acres and 10% containment (up from 5%..that's good news).
More good news--they've held the fire back from Carpenteria on that west flank (the part that was eating 101 from south to north), and it looks like Fillmore is still there this morning...and they have held that south-east front from the town.
even more good news...at least at the moment, winds are minimal and in some places, "calm". If that holds until they get the planes up, they might make some real progress on this bitch today.
Caveat: still under a red flag warning and all have been warned that Santa Ana's could whip up again at any time...this warning last until Sunday.

Just updated... 12/9 early morning MODIS thermal map shows burn activity in the #LosPadresNF NW of #Fillmore, on the Camenio Cielo west and southwest of Matilija Hot Springs, and south of Lake Casitas
there are a number of homes in the Matilija canyon, and at one point over the scanner last night, they had to bring in engines to make a line to protect the homes. Last I heard, it was a successful standoff.

also, this Santa Barbara county notice regarding evacuations:
"Santa Barbara County @countyofsb Follow Follow @countyofsb More The Rincon Point area remains in a mandatory evacuation order. The voluntary evacuation (warning) area consists of the area north of Highway 192 to East Camino Cielo, east of Toro Canyon Road to the County line. All road closures remain in effect. #thomasfire (2/2) 10:07 AM - 9 Dec 2017"
While city of Ventura is now out of danger, the active fire has moved north (north west and north east) and those areas are still very dangerous and further new evacuations may be still called as the fire continues to march and spread north.

update: Per Mike Eliason SBCFire PIO "The fire is now officially in Santa Barbara County by Divide Peak. This was expected movement and no reason to be panicked, but everyone should remain vigilant as they would anytime there’s a fire. Progressively moving to west"
Personal observation: today, from my vantage point 55 mi ne of fires, I can see the fire has erupted on both east side and west side. This fire has two heads which have been very active most of the day. The winds have picked up a little out of the east today (Santa ana's), no where near what they were the night this broke out, but definitely stronger than yesterday's. That could be what's going on down there.

Listening to scanner... the winds are pushing the fire toward Carpenteria from the east and down the slope. Fire fighters are preparing to make a stand along hwy 150 and preparing to call for new evacs. Per scanner, fire is about 3/4 mi from hwy now and winds are still rising in the area.
They had sort of expected this from the forcasts earlier today and have fire fighting resources lined up.

video link -- this is from Santa Barbara news press taken at around 1am (about 20 min ago of this post) showing the fire approaching Carpinteria from the east. You can make out the flashing lights of emergency vehicles between the camera and the fire. Going to be a long night for them.
Winds erratic. three more strike teams incoming...evacuations being set up. Will pass along any evac info if that is posted.

Fire was 150 yards from major power lines (per scanner), sounds like they are shutting down power as the fire approaches for safety...unfortunately that has put a lot of people in the area in the dark. No idea for how long.

the whole "Shepherd's Mesa" area of eastern Carpinteria (just north side of 150) has been evacuated and engines taking up positions among the homes as the fire approaches.
many strike teams stationed all up and down hwy 150 to make a stand and keep this out of Carpinteria as the fire makes a hard run for the town.

Official notices online now from Santa Barbara Office of Emergency Management...more strike teams arriving. This is going to be a major battle.
Going outside, you can tell the fire's blowing up down there. It looks like the sun is trying to rise in the southwest tonight.

apparently, SB emerg services sent an "evacuate now!" text to all of the county, it was only meant for the area north/east of Carpinteria. If you received one of those messages and are NOT in Carpinteria, please disregard (freaked out a lot of people)...county services apologizes.

These evacuations are likely to be expanded soon, but this is what we have so far..
the fire's moving along the ridge east of Carpinteria toward Summerland and Toro Canyon. We may see mandatory evacs for all of Carpinteria. Firemen are putting up a very brave fight trying to keep it out of Carpinteria.

Update.. fire "creeped" last night as the winds behaved. No major runs toward populations (although it continued slow burning in wildland). That being said, no evac lifting either last night as it is still skirting population zones and a wind shift could change everything.
Article and updated info:
Thomas Fire burns 230,500 acres, containment increases to 15% Posted: Dec 11, 2017 6:42 AM PST Updated: Dec 11, 2017 6:42 AM PST By KSBY StaffCONNECT
CAL FIRE announced Monday morning that the Thomas Fire burning in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties grew just 500 acres overnight, bringing the total acres burned to 230,500.
While flames could be seen making their way down hillsides in the Carpinteria area overnight, fire officials said containment has increased back up to 15 percent contained.
Nearly 6,400 firefighters are still battling the flames and fire officials say close to 800 structures have been destroyed.
Despite the increased containment, evacuation warnings and orders remain in effect for portions of southern Santa Barbara County.
Thousands of people have been forced from their homes since the fire broke out the evening of December 5 in Santa Paula.
Sunday, smoke and ash were affecting all of Santa Barbara County and even portions of San Luis Obispo County.
Because of this, masks will be distributed again Monday in Lompoc, Goleta, Santa Barbara, and Carpinteria.
A large majority of schools in Santa Barbara have also announced closures for Monday and some for the entire week.
The cause remains under investigation.

|
|
On the somewhat forgotten eastern front, the fire's been creeping around some steep cliffs. While the 747 tanker (VLAT) was hitting it yesterday, at some point in the early morning it chewed through retardant lines and has sent a finger of flame down behind Fillmore along Hwy 126. They have closed a few of the roads in the vicinity and working at beating that back again to the cliffs. It's possible some outlying homes on the backside of Fillmore may be re-evacuated while that battle goes on.
There's also a report that a house is fully engulfed back up 150 between Ojai and Santa Paula. Fire fighters were dealing with that. The fire already passed through that area days ago, but another reminder that embers lurk and why fire fighters often stay weeks (or months) after a fire to do mop up so these don't reignite. If you're in an evac zone, please stay evacuated until the all clear (fire fighters have been through and checked for hot spots, hazards). You may not still see fire, but it doesn't mean it's safe to go back.

Sadie is about 42 pound lab X rescue. She's 13 yrs old. Photo of her above as she was on adoption day 12 years ago (she has grey muzzle and eyebrows now!)
This morning, she bounced up and down when we came down stairs, flipped on her back and had a good roll. I haven't seen her do that in many months. It's good to see her feeling so much better all ready :)
We Lost Dusty about 2 yrs ago, and Tazz about 3 years ago. They were both "Salukis". Tazz was 16 and Dusty was 14 when they left us. We still have Sonnet, Tazz and Dusty's niece! She is 14 now. We also decided it was time to bring in a new recruit. Our new pup is a Golden Lab/terrier cross (and maybe a bit of velociraptor..wow, she can destroy a stuffed toy in under 10 seconds). we brought her home 10 weeks old earlier this year and she just celebrated her first birthday :) Her name is Joy!! --and you have to say it with the exclamation marks, because that is her personality--bouncy, energetic, and loves life and people (but maybe not that nasty squeeky in the stuffed toys).
Are you hanging by the thread due to health? Fires? Jobs? We need to find you a sturdier rope!!! (and maybe a safety net). I hope the smoke from the fires isn't hurting you. It's so nasty, I hear.

Ahh, Salukis, I remember now. I also remember you losing Tazz, but not Dusty, how did I miss that event? So hard losing much-loved family members, though they had the best of lives with you.
Sadie looks such a sweetheart. She and Sonnet must have missed therm too, so I bet they are thrilled to have Joy as an addition. Glad Sadie is healing well.
Yes, the smoke from the fires was quite bad for a couple of days. Please send sturdy rope too, or better still a beanstalk. An accumulation of things really, can't really go into it sadly.

Just watched a press conference on the fire by all the unified agencies working on it.
Basically...they had a break today. Along the Carpinteria-Santa Barbara coast line they had a week "on shore" flow (opposite of the Santa ana's... coming off the ocean) making conditions perfect to do some back fires. This creates a larger buffer between the wildfire still stalking around the cliffs and the population and homes. The fire can't make a run into town if there's no fuel there to burn. Some of those backfires are still being seen above the towns. they had the opportunity to do this, and they took it.
The other thing they did today was hit it very hard along the front with air craft. They did effectively slow the fire way down around the populated areas and, in some cases, divert it away.
There are some areas at the very north of the fire that has gone relatively unchecked...they said they will be getting to that fire, but their population fronts are their first priority.
Questions were brought up about the front on the east side that made a run out of the hills toward the town of Fillmore earlier today. They have it beaten back. They are hoping it starves itself... it's surrounded by black ground (already burned on the west... and sheer cliffs of rock to it's north that it can't burn. They're keeping the retardant on the path south to town and once the fuel is gone, it should just simply die.
The Condor Sanctuary north of the Fillmore spur was also asked about. Many are worried about the endangered California Condor that is protected there. they said those sheer cliffs are protecting fire's path to the Sanctuary and they don't anticipated burning rock and threatening it...basically, it's safe at this point.
If the winds continue to cut them a break tonight, they will continue to make progress.
they lost about 2,000 acres today..but that was mostly in the northern front where it's wild land and unchecked at the moment. Around the mountains around Santa Barbara, they didn't get it out...but they pushed it back and cut off a lot of the access to the homes (backfiring and laying retardant buffers down, cutting line).
they cautioned all that this could change if the winds, again, come out of nowhere as they sometimes do even when forecasts don't see it coming. So, while some of the southern parts of the fire are having evacuations lifted, for the moment, the west front is keeping those in tact until they are sure the fire can no longer threaten those towns. Best case scenario is having those areas repopulated by the end of the week.

latest update above...
also, due to the backfiring in Toro and Romero Canyons above Carpinteria, lots of people freaking out. As far as I've heard, these are controlled burns and being closely monitored by teams of fire personnel with the wind blowing from south to north (away from coastal cities). No new evacuations in that area are being called contrary to rumors.
**The east side of the fire is another story. this morning there was a break out above Fillmore with the fire trying to make a run for the north side of town. It was beaten back (again). More retardant laid down by air craft... but tonight, this stubborn area seems to be making another run. A notice has been issued that due to the threat of this fire that Fillmore schools are canceling classes tomorrow. If I hear of any evacs due to this break out, I'll alert. They do have night-vision helicoptors working on the fire to help tonight.

they've got an emergency air evacuation going on for a fire fighter who was working with a team up in Toro Canyon above Carpinteria. Awaiting news on whether they get him out. He apparently succumbed to heat exhaustion.
per hamm radio: Air Squad 8 fifteen minute ETE to firefighter who has been injured in ToroCanyon Carpinteria, emergency air evacuation
There also seems to be a major flare up somwhere on the eastern side of the fire (closer to Fillmore)...and this is the first time we've seen a major smoke plume today come up. It looks like it may be further north than the previous outbreak. Trying to get mroe info on that and whether that's near homes or not. From the heat map, could be closer to the Sespe Condor preserve.

242,000acres and 30% containment. They are now working against a clock. Santa Ana's are forecasts to start amplifying up to 55mph by Saturday morning.
there are 2 or three stubborn spots they have to try to reduce before this happens.
Luckily, fire fighters have a good black line of back burn area between the fire and coast cities.
this fire has now surpassed the "Zaca" fire and is now the 4th largest fire in Calif. history.

267,500 acres tonight
per press conference
still listing it as 40% contained (although they may lower that after today)
Winds expected to continue to diminish tonight for Santa Barbara on western front...
Winds expected to increase on the east side (near Filmore/Ventura county) by morning and tomorrow.that may be the next problem spot.

As I heard a fire chief say at a recent press conference, "Welcome to Ground Hog Day"...
Yes, this fire is still going, and now the 3rd largest in California history.
The good news: Open flames noticeably reduced. Line building and offensive measures full speed as fire fighters try to get a line around this monster. Smoke, much reduced (but not gone--mainly noticeable from the northern front of the fire in the Sespe Wilderness/Rose Valley area of the fire).
Some evacs have been lifted (hwy 154 now open).
Many are not...and here's why:
Bad news: Weather forecasts are for major Santa Ana wind event, maybe rivaling the one that just took out Ventura and half of Montecito with hurricane force winds. That should happen on Wednesday. In many of the neighborhoods that interface wtih wild lands not in full control yet, all mandatory evacuations and road closures are still in effect. They do not know if their lines are going to hold if challenged again.
While open flame is not being seen in many areas, there are lots of little smoldering "smokers" that they are not going to bet to by Wednesday. Any one of these, once fanned by the bellows of the Santa Anas, could re-erupt in a full fledged firestorm once more. They hope that doesn't happen, but are unwilling to risk people's lives on that.
Everything hangs on if the lines hold on Wednesday.
Here's the latest stats: "ThomasFire is 270,000 acres and is 45% contained. This 🔥 is expected to become California's largest fire ever. This fire is still burning strong today. FFs are hoping to gain more control of this before SantaAnaWinds return on Wednesday. Containment expected to increase."
over 8,000 firefighters and national guardsmen are battling this fire with at least 2 deaths attributed to it (one civilian, and one fire fighter). Many of these will not be with their families for Christmas this year due to their job.
Thousands of residents are still evacuated..either having lost their home, or unable to go back to it...and probably will be over Christmas.
I'm hoping things stay relatively quiet for the next 24-48 hours and we'll see what happens when and if those winds hit.

It's been a loooong hall. this is Kern County team #11 (from my area) who have been busting their butts on this fire and probably will be allowed to go home!
The lines held during the windstorm!! Great news, this is going into "mop up" and they have turned a huge corner.
Evacuees will start being let back to their homes (if still standing), some by christmas. They have to check neighborhoods to make sure it's safe, even if fire's gone. There could be live wires, toxic spills, down trees and other safety hazards. They want to make sure that power and water are restored before allowing citizens back in. But....the process is starting.
here are the last figures I'm going to post unless something totally drastic happens (which is not expected):
Acres - 272,200 Containment - 60% Structures Threatened - 18,000 Destroyed - 1,063 Damaged - 280 Personnel - 5,644 Engines - 407 Crews - 148 Helicopters - 34 Dozers - 31 Water Tenders - 54
You will notice that fire personnel has gone from over 8,000 down to 5,644* They are already releasing long distance fighters to go home. That number will continue to decrease until mop up is completed and all who can go home, get returned to their homes.

Winds also did a 180 and is now blowing out of the N- NE (rather than off ocean)
Fire's blowing up dramatically. flickers of flamed have turned into walls of flames again within a very short time.
Fire fighter's scrambling to respond. They have been expecting this wind event.

These are the new "voluntary" evacs...
Officials caution, if you feel threatened, don't wait for a mandatory, evacuate. Situation is very dangerous and changing so quickly that you should wait for officials if you see flames.
In some cases, you may need to evacuate before officials can get a text out.
Now gusts are 65mph coming down the mountain and still climbing..exceeding weather forecast expectations.

This was a Cal Fire fire fighter out of their San Diego site brought in to help with the fires. I heard another official on the radio say that, as far as she knew, there were no other injuries to other fire fighters at this incident. They have a team there doing a thorough investigation as to what happened to cause this death. They will not be releasing further details about what happened until the investigation is done and family of the lost fire fighter is given those details first.
Cal Fire has representatives with the family at this time to help them through this.

As the fire fighter's body was removed into a hearse for transport out of the fire front area where he died, firefighters stood and saluted.
All along the route as the hearse drove through LA, firefighters, police and other first responders stopped, parked, stood on overpasses and bridges and saluted the procession as it passed.

Medical examiners have just released a cause of death for Cory Iverson, the fire fighter that was killed day before yesterday in the Thomas Fire:
"The northeastern Ventura County community of Fillmore was also still under threat from the eastern flank of the blaze, where a CAL Fire engineer was killed Thursday near the agricultural town of Fillmore. An autopsy performed Friday determined 32-year-old Cory Iverson of San Diego died of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, according to the Ventura County medical examiner."

A somber procession this morning is currently underway as they transport the body of fallen fire fighter Cory Iverson through five counties back to his home county of San Diego.
Citizens in the fire affected area with flags and saluting first responders lined streets and overpasses as the procession passes.
Cory's widow, who is herself pregnant and expecting, showed up at a press conference to speak and urge fire-fighters to continue to honor her husband by fighting this fire and putting it out.
True hero send off going on. We need more heroes today---just sad this one had to die.
**Cory died setting a backfire above the town of Fillmore when the wind abruptly changed and turned on him. Fillmore is safe at this time.

yes, I've got a call to him but figure he must be on the road, saying prayers for his safety - and everybody else too. Just found Caltrans twitter feed, lots of closures on I-5, none on 101 yet! Winds look to be calming down for now but that can change quickly.
I have to make spaghetti and meatballs so will try to check back in later on, thanks again Redhart.

hwy 150 through the evacuation area is completely gridlocked and backed up for miles. Could be worst case scenario...
The fact I went outside and could see the red glow of this fire from about 100 mi nne of it tells me this is one nasty bitch of intensity and ferocity tonight. I'm sending prayers. This isn't looking good. Calls also going out to retreat engines because the fire's moving so fast in the 70mph gusts.

Thomas Fire Burns Into Second Day Amid Fierce Santa Ana Winds
Fueled by fierce fast winds and tinder dry conditions, the Thomas Fire burned hillsides in Ventura County for a second day Tuesday, scorching 45,500 acres, prompting tens of thousands of evacuations, destroying 150 structures and prompting a state of emergency. Jim Cantore ✔ @JimCantore Based on perimeter and initiation: 3,729 acres/hr 62 acres/minute 1 acre/second Roughly a football field a second https://twitter.com/vcfd_pio/status/937986092975865856 …
Fire officials expect the wildfire will scorch at least 50,000 acres in the mountains between Santa Paula and Ventura. "The prospects for containment are not good," said Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen. The fire, burning just south of Thomas Aquinas College, killed a family pet and injured a firefighter. The college issued a fire alert Monday around 8 p.m. and evacuated all students to nearby homes as a precaution.
More than 8,000 homes were evacuated and 20,000 people remained without power Tuesday. That figure was down from 200,000 customers who were in the dark Monday night because of transmission line problems associated with the fire. The fire spread extremely quickly. The Ventura County Fire Department tweeted that the fire was moving fast and was burning in steep terrain with 25 to 30 mph winds.
At least 150 structures were damaged, according to the fire department. One of those was the Vista del Mar Hospital, an 83-bed mental health facility at 801 Seneca St. All patients were evacuated safely, but the majority of buildings were left to be nothing but smoking husks. The apartments on the skirts of the facility had not yet been threatened by 6 a.m. "Oh my god, just devastation for these people," said Leticia Broida, an employee. "The whole hospital is gone."
Mandatory evacuations were ordered for west Ventura shortly before 1 a.m., Tuesday. Multiple homes and buildings were reportedly burned in the area and palm trees were on flames behind Ventura City Hall. Due to the intensity of the blaze, fire crews were reportedly having difficulties accessing the burned areas. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office advised residents to go to vcemergency.com for the most up-to-date information.
While red flag warnings are now schedule to expire at 6 p.m. Thursday, "long range computer models are showing the possibility that the Santa Ana winds could persist into Friday or Saturday, which may require the extension of the red flag warning," according to an NWS statement.

quick map to help people sort of visualize what's going on and where the fires/evacs are.
the San Fernando valley is pretty much surrounded by the Rye fire in the north, the Thomas fire on the west, the Creek fire on the east and as of 5am this morning, the Skirball fire on the south. 405 still closed through the pass last I heard.

I think what is so frightening about this fire is the speed in which it is travelling...the winds aren't dying down until Thursday from what I understand...tragic for all involved. Lots of offers of help from concerned areas nearby. Keep safe Redhart and all those in evacuation areas!

via scanner City hydrants have lost pressure. They're calling for city water to come out asap and find out why.
Also, a batallion chief has been hit by a vehical and taken by ambulance.
one ray of hope: winds are starting to die down a bit. This might allow for more helicopters to go up...also, Kern county fire has arrived and other county help is arriving ...many more on the way. In some places, they have only one engine to try to protect whole streets..resources extremely thin. the incoming help is crucial.
