Woke up and got a 5:30am report of a new fire that has apparently closed the 405 through the San Fernando Valley--this would be in the Skirball/Mullholland area of the 405. last Ilooked at the modis active fire mapper, there has been no "active" fire around skirball since yesterday afternoon. Unless something drastic happens (like winds suddenly rise, which they could,and get embers going)...that one is probably good, just doing cleanup. Same with Rye fire. Eye witness reports said they cannot see active flame from that area,but there are still "hot spots" with wisps of smoke dotted around landscape. Creek appears to be burning out into wildlands away from residences now (as long as the winds don't shift). The biggest threat is the Thomas fire which continues to march west and north toward Santa Barbara and Fillmore (south eastern front) is not totally out of the woods yet...spotting still being sporadically reported. Just heard a report over CNN saying there's a new fire around San Diego. Don't have much info on that one, whether it's threatening anyone or how big. |

It wears on one, for sure. Just read where apparently 10-15 horses were killed in Lilac fire. My heart just breaks reading all this stuff...feel very powerless (like most people watching, I'm sure). |

well, I only had one reference to the "sweet fire", but have seen no other references. So...I'm calling that a dead report right now unless it resurfaces. I did find a new post from Cal Trans listing road closures due to fire in Southern California. |

it's such a beautiful area, we used to drive through there a lot just to see all the homes, wildlife along the creek there. Well that was back in the 60s, since then, my brother biked Mulholland drive, Topanga canyon drive many times. My sister's best friend lives near the Will Rogers State park off Sunset Blvd, don't think her home is in danger yet but watching the map very closely. Lionel Ritchie had to evacuate, Gyweneth Paltrow's (sp?) home is in danger. Bel Air used to be our old stomping grounds for a nice drive to see if we could run into any movie stars back in the day. Just read, many people advised to open their electric front gates now lest power goes out if they need to evacuate, shows you the level of properties in danger! In 1961, the Bel Air fire consumed over 500 homes. I remember that fire as we lived in Los Angeles at the time and could see the flames at night from my parent's home!! yes, back then I also remember seeing flames from several Malibu fires though I don't remember how much damage was done, only that they were all in December! So. Cal. was so green back then before global warming cooked it. We never used to have massive droughts then but these days, if anyone can get out of there, I advise them to do just that. My cousin and I used to drive all through those hills, gawked a lot at all the beautiful homes, wishing we lived there. We must be in the same age group that I will never admit to, lol. |
