Subject: New Fire! Lilac fire near Fallbrook exploding now

URL: https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Fire-Escondido-State-Route-76-Interstate-15-462596483.html

heading toward Escondito, Carlsbad. Many horses, livestock. The Lilac fire has exploded this morning from 50 acres to 500 acres. Looks very windy from the live reporting at the link. Already structures burned, etc. Here's the report:

A brush fire that sparked alongside a North County highway interchange took off in extreme fire conditions, scorched hundreds of acres and prompted mandatory evacuations of residents and school children near Fallbrook.

The Lilac Fire, as it's been named by Cal Fire officials, has burned 500 acres west of southbound Interstate 15 and south of State Route 76.

Two structures were destroyed and 12 others were damaged, according to Cal Fire officials.

The fire, first reported at 11:20 a.m., prompted a SigAlert on southbound I-15 causing delays until all lanes were reopened as of 1:10 p.m. California Highway Patrol closed the off-ramp from I-15 to Old Highway 395.

SR-76 has been closed to traffic.

The fire was burning along Keys Canyon near the Rancho Monserate Country Club mobile home park.

The smoke was so thick, it was blocking out the sun for a while, according to an NBC 7 news crew.

The division, where residents were mostly senior citizens, was evacuated, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department Lt. Giantonio.

Mandatory evacuations were also in effect for:
•Bonsall High School
•Sullivan Middle School
•Bonsall Elementary School

•All of West Lilac Road
•North of W. Lilac Rd. South of Hwy 76 East of S. Mission Rd. West Of I-15 Freeway
•North of Camino Del Rey West of I-15 Freeway South of W. Lilac Rd. to Mission Rd.

Students were being moved to Fallbrook High School, district officials said.

Embers scorched some landscaping at Sullivan Middle School but the campus looked like a ghost town. Fire crews were walking around the school putting out hotspots.

Residents were sent to the East Valley Community Center on 2245 E. Valley Parkway in Escondido.

Three temporary evacuation shelters have been set up at Fallbrook High School, Pechanga Casino and Pala Casino.

Wind gusts in the area of the fire were recorded from a northeast direction as strong as 51 mph on Highway 76 in Pala, according to the National Weather Service. The winds along I-15 near the fire were recorded at 30 to 35 mph.

hooking you up to the twitter feed for latest news.
Just saw horses running in a field surrounded in fire.
More horses running around in another area. The embers from the fire are spotting from quite a distance. This is a very bad area for any fire.

Changed my mind, linking you to the interactive map of the area instead of twitter feed.

There's still live news reporting at the link I posted in the above post.

20 structures burned, 1 fatality from a falling tree, 2 folks with burns. Winds dying down for now and military helicopters helping out with this fire. Much larger evac. areas since I last looked. There must be hundreds of livestock that are affected let alone all the evacuees. :(

my job today was to plant dozens of tulip, daffodil, crocus bulbs before I saw these new fires. Well I got out there and just did it. We have east winds blowing here too and they are cold.
I sure feel for the folks having to breathe that acrid smoke, our summer was filled with thick smoke from forest fires.
Hope you and fam, doggies are all ok!
