thanks again for all the important info Redhart, spaghetti is cooking so have a bit of time for update on brother. He called, made it to his MIL's home in Northridge. He said the smoke was so heavy he could hardly see on Hwy 101 and did see homes in flames on the way. Now he's there and the smoke from the Creek fire is pretty bad there as well.

You must be up pretty high to see those fires yet my sister in Nipomo says she can see the fire smoke in Ventura which has to be at least 100 miles away!

NASA has a jaw dropping image of the smoke from these fires at the link. Taken from satellite this afternoon.

I'm glad he made it there safely.

I'm surrounded by southern sierras (Tehachapi Mts.),
but there is a keyhole gap in the mountains just to
the ssw-sw of me that gives me a birdseye view across
the southern central valley through to the grapevine
area and out towards the coast.

I was just out looking and can no longer see the
Ventura smoke...I'm guessing it's just lower ...maybe
winds picking up and hugging it closer below the
mountains. Last night, it looked like a glowing red
cloud from here along the horizon. I can see the plume
from the "Rye" fire near Santa Clarita, which would be
the northern most fire (5,000acr) and burning in the
area around I-5 near 6 flags/magic mountain.

I'd say I'm about 35-40 mi nne of that one. I got a
good look at the map, and Ventura would be about 60-
70mi sw of me. The Creek fire is harder to see as it's
about 50-60 mi nearly directly south. that direction
is blocked from my view by Mt. Cummings.

When Vandenberg launches rockets, I can see them from
my keyhole gap (but that's truly about 100 mi sw and
best viewed with binoculars or they look like streaks
or dots on the horizon lol).

seeing a lot of this: "“News crew-“If you are west of
the 210 freeway in Pacomia and Sylmar area, get out
now. Don’t wait for the sheriff to come by.”

btw, I can see the plume from this fire too from up
here in Tehachapi looking through gap in mts to the
ssw. I see a huge elongated plume (about 100mi ssw)
from Ventura, and a smaller, but rapidly growing column
of smoke from Newhall area (Creek fire) roughtly 40-50
mi to ssw.
