At least 41 people died after hundreds of fires spread
across central and northern areas on Sunday and
Monday.

They started in dry conditions and were fanned by
strong Atlantic winds from Hurricane Ophelia.

But, one of my brothers is in that region and so far
we have no idea if he survived. I spoke with the
British Consulate in Lisbon who told me that no
British people are known to have been harmed and he
might be at an emergency centre, I await more
information.

Communicating with people in the stricken areas is not
at all easy. The fires there were so utterly
devastating that all land based communications
infrastructure has been wiped out - both wired and
wireless / mobile (cell) phones. The only
communication is via satellite phones, and these are
heavily overloaded.

simon, -it's stunning how many wildfires have raged across in Portugal as well...

I've visited there, it's a beautiful country...
just a few months ago at least 67 people died in their cars as the fires were raging...

I say a prayer that your brother is safe & well. It has to be hard not
knowing. Did the California & Portugal fires start close to the same
time?

Thanks C.

Well he is safe in a way, its just that this comment only applies to his spiritual essence - and not his physical body which the police found on the ground, badly burnt.

The linked newspaper article explains the situation with some horrific photos (no bodies, just scenes of devastation and clouds such as would fit a film about the end of the world).

My surviving brothers are going out there in a few days time and will allow the police to have a DNA sample so that the body can be formally identified.

As much as I am extremely upset about this the fact is that I am grateful for the picture falling down for no apparant reason which acted as a warning of an impending death a few days in advance.
