A flyover was made for Santa Rosa so people can check specific roads and damage to their own home. Under the smoke is where you'll find the damage that is ash colored. It's pretty bad. The map is focused on Fountaingrove. Red color is vegetation.
Looks like both vendors I thought might be in the line of fire are OKAY. Whew.
From 2-5am, after midnight, is when the wind is coming from NNE. Nullschool shows strong NNW/NW winds at very high elevation all the way down to the surface, where the wind is very low speed right now. It's hard to believe the wind direction is going to totally change after midnight. Maybe the NNE winds won't pan out, as predicted- :D I will know which way the wind is blowing from the increase in smoke. I've been smelling something like an odd bar soap smell today, not like the neighbor's laundry. I thought maybe it's flame retardant or from the oil of trees burning, not sure.
I'll be glad when this next week has passed and more fire equipment gets on the scene. There are more NNE winds predicted for a couple days next week, then we are getting (crossing fingers) RAIN on Thursday!

dang, fire keeps getting closer to Sonoma, and now I see why there were so many airplanes over Sugerloaf, look at the fires there! Thanks for the map but I can't make heads or tails out of it. I'm drowning in information, been at it since 7am!

I hear ya, it's been hard to sleep not knowing what's happening one hill or another away from me. There is that trauma type feeling in the air, a kind of uneasy quiet. I'm hoping they can stop any extension of fire in E/W Sonoma with the backfires. The way a dry patch will suddenly flare up into a torch on the ridge is scary. I feel better knowing that people and animals have a place to evacuate to. Also, reading about the survivor cats somehow finding a fireman or sheriff who rescues them, warms my heart- :) For those animals unlucky enough to be half-burned and still alive, I pray their suffering will be lessened soon, becoming spirits in the sky.
This morning I thought I heard what Petra calls 'helicopter' ear sounds, internal not external but realized maybe it was a closer than usual helicopter overhead (was in the middle of something so didn't look). I'm wondering could all these fires loosen up the RCF? Ack.
What really blows my mind is watching the wind nullschool maps at different altitudes, realizing how quickly the winds can change in a huge, very deep air column! Most all layers were onshore last night, this morning all offshore. I don't know enough about the weather to know how that happens overnight.

Here's a scanner feed (one of them). They also have others for Sonoma and napa county fire that are going. I took a listen and this one seems to be channeling a lot of the aircraft info and emergency response (unified):

I have my county's fire scanner on speed dial here (bookmarked), and have it going today because the winds have just come up pretty good here.
The scanners give you real time information of the movements and dispatches of emergency fire services.

Thanks, your link has great listening to follow the firefighters! Occasionally you'll hear a humorous quip that keeps the guy's spirits up- :)
Here's the best radio show if not posted already. Kim Komando's show is on all-day fire update status, doing a great communication service to the public. You can call in and ask questions that she'll try to get answered quickly. She's broadcasting constant fire updates and the latest Cal Fire news conferences. Many of the fires are in containment with only one fire, the Oakmont-Nuns, growing large. Apparently there was a new (Oakmont) fire that took root during the wind events of the last two days. Today the wind is better and firefighters are feeling better about containment but there is no containment line on the Nuns fire. It's steep and rugged territory threatening mostly all the animals in the area.
Calistoga is off evac now and certain areas in Santa rosa are being repopulated, with Kaiser opening it's pharmacy today and the medical office building pharmacy on Monday. They are hoping to get Sutter and Kaiser hospitals open, excepting the emergency groups open today at Kaiser, about mid-week.
There are numerous backfire activities also, some scaring the heck out of Petalumans, from a plume that suddenly popped into view from their 2nd story houses (not mine alas, no 'copter viewing here).
The entire CA and NV picture shows we are still in active fire season. The Anaheim fire rekindled so the heat is on to fight fire with fire and get all of these fires snuffed ASAP. The rain will be so welcome, hopefully a litte sooner than Thursday! I can see the storm close to the coast now on unisys weather. Yippeee.
Another thing, about donations. If you want to donate, the Redwood Credit Union Relief Fund is one of the best to get money directly to the locals. Sonoma has shown how amazing their community is in their ability to communicate and pull resources together! The number of restaurants in Santa Rosa and Napa giving out lunch and dinner for free (for 4 people), some who's owners have lost their own homes, truly deserve congratulations after the fires are over and recovery can begin in earnest.
One of the police updates on the news conference included a plea to send 'Thank You's' to all the Bay Area and other Cali police departments as there has been extensive support from 76 counties- wow. They have stopped 150 wannabee looters, so far, and are helping greatly with logistics in the fire and evac zones.
We do have more days of wind ahead, some NE, so here's hoping the rain will be the final insurance on already, well-contained fire zones. Pray for a containment perimeter for the Nuns fire- :) Oh, and rain, sooner than Thursday!

The latest update is that a drunk pilot was arrested in Petaluma - go figure! I hope someone publishes his name.
