Subject: Corey (Cory?) fire - Kern county

Hi, just got a call from my husband on the way home
from Bakersfield. There's a new fire working it's
way up to our neighborhood (Bear Valley Springs
community in Tehachapi). It's between the 228/Arvin
and the top of the mountain (Deer Trail/Commanche)
and if it reaches to top, it threatens both Stallion
Springs neighborhood and Bear Valley Springs (west
edge). There is a lot of smoke through the mountains
here, it seems to be blowing from the north west to
the south east at this time.

I'm on the eastern edge, so okay for now.

I've got my scanner on and listening in and they are
sending in tankers from Porterville and they are
enroute. Kern Fire is forming a defensive line
along Deer Trail (Westernmost road of Bear Valley
Springs) along the top of the ridge.

The good news is, at least right now, the winds are
calm. I have every confidence in Kern Fire/Cal Fire
to get this threat out before it broaches the top of
the ridge.

In some cases PG&E have cut the lines as a sort of fire break . The
towers here went down for a short while, but all seems to be under
control so far. Fires are getting smaller very slowly. No smoke in
these foothills today.

I always keep a landline (which will still be
powered even in blackouts).

They are still dealing with this fire, but there is
good news. After having it switch direction on them
and scrambling, they now have it pinned down again--
they have their crews still at the ridge, but
scanner says that they are canceling standbye
requests for further crews and equipment (good
sign).

They were having a heck of a time locating aircraft
and crews for this as so many have been sent north
to fight the monster fires. It's very clear
resources are thin all over the state.

But, again, the good news is they think they have
this beasty surrounded and now on the run before it
hit any residences.

We also have a landline for when power goes out.

phew, that's good news Redhart. I did find a flight tracker website that shows where the airplanes are, don't see any in your area for now, plenty up north though.
Our favorite old winery (oldest in the state) Buena Vista winery where we used to have picnics with the kids, dogs is in dire danger now from fires advancing toward the town of Sonoma. Active fires are at the map at the link. They have live updates.
Take care, Sheila

thanks, Sheila... they are releasing aircraft and
crews now so they can go back to fighting other fires.
they have some left. According to a bulletin I got
from our community emergency system, the fire here is
now 75% contained and should be fully contained by
8pm. It has burned 183 acres. Sounds like a drop in
the bucket compared to the northern fires, but it was
heading straight for our neighborhood..a dense
population of homes and wildlife here.
