Wow, it's so hard to fathom such a deep and wide destruction of Cali and the West Coast in general - it's wild. Press Democrat has a great, live fire map at the link.
Also, Modis satellite shows fire detections all over Texas. What is going on with this I wonder, more aftermath hurricane destruction? Check the legend to see the color and shape code categories. The brown circles show the potential fire detections.
Lord Have Mercy! As the onshore winds slowly shift back and forth with the offshore NE winds, that acrid fire smell is coming in again, giving me a headache. Walnut Creek, SF, and Dublin are in much worse shape for smoke, at the moment. One thing is for sure, the fires are going to be driven south tonight, if nullschool is any indication. The dangerous offshore wind direction is not supposed to start in earnest until later today. There is a small storm off the coast. We need to call that sucker in! There is an extension from the storm that is making headway across SF through the Golden Gate, as long as the northern onshore winds continue to be strong. TV weather says it will be 5-7 days before we have any chance of rain. Well, I pray that rain won't be long in coming to douse some flames- ;)
The birds and bees seem to be hunkering down as the smoke wafts in. I found two bees inside one of my hummingbird feeders this morning, bobbing on top of the nectar. I turned for a second and looked back to see them gone from the ground where I slowly poured them out with the nectar. Who knew bees can tread nectar for a 1/2 hour- :D
I've been praying that the woman from Bennett Valley I met last night will be able to go back to her 'spared' house. The ridge was on fire when she left but the fire hadn't climbed down to her block of houses yet.

to add to the mix. Thanks for the map Polydactyl, collecting quite a few of them now, all pretty good at showing active fires. MODIS satellite image for today (at the link) shows the fires smoke blowing from north to south which is probably the reason for the evacs in said cities. Fires are directly north of them. Didn't know bees could tread nectar either! ;)

A follow up on those crazy bees. This morning I went out and replenished the bee 'watering station' to keep them off the hummingbird feeders. As I was checking the regular feeder for nectar fill, one bee zoomed in, dove through a white plastic flower, and I thought was going to drown. I quickly took off the flower he dove through, and as I got it off, he flew up through another plastic flower and OUT. I cannot believe these antics! I've never seen bees do these crazy things, all for the love of sugar, LOL. A little bee cartoon comes to mind, with a wily bee, smiling as he zips in and out the plastic flowers saying, look at me, look at me..ha! TG the hummers have a way to do their own low flying vibration next to the bees, if they get mad enough. The bees back off, wa'la.
