I'm a pretty tough old broad who has seen many videos of fire damage but by God this video shows the utter, complete destruction of so many homes and I cried for these families who've lost everything.
So far, 3500 structures have been destroyed in these fires which puts it on par with the 1991 Oakland hills fire which destroyed 2900 structures.
Full screen this video to get the full effect of what's happening in one of the most beautiful areas of California.

well I guess the mail must get delivered so this short video by the same drone/person as the one above shows the deliveries to burned homes. Also, just saw a lot of photos of burned homes in Glen Ellen, it got hit hard. Peace

Thanks for sharing this. Devastating! Have been through so many fires in CA, in my 66 years here. Mostly Angeles Nat'l Forest and foothills. Have never seen anything like what these dear people have been through. Truly overwhelming. Has been hard to even comment on, to find the words. Exceptionally beautiful area! Bless everyone.

What blows me away is the scope of this.. the sheer area and number of people and homes. In so many cases, they aren't just cabins and woodland vacation homes, these are huge subdivisions of suburban neighborhoods.
This means no one is really safe from these fires when the wind blows. It could happen to anyone, in any town under the right conditions. You and me.

I thought about that a lot this summer when there were such huge, horrid fires here in Oregon. It was our driest summer ever so we cleared huge bunches of dry vegetation way out back in our new (to us) home's backyard where 6 huge fir trees, several apple trees had been shedding leaves, limbs for probably 10 years! On the other side of our backyard fence is a community college parking lot. One cigarette tossed would have been our very own firestorm!
Yes, it could happen anywhere in any town, city, especially here on the W. coast.

Profound...amongst the rubble the green trees still stand.
I lost all my belongings in a fire once as did others in similar circumstance at the time...it was difficult to say the least especially in a new town in a new state.
These fires remind me in ways of last year and the Smoky Mountains.

I lost a home to fire too many years ago, it burned to the ground. I cried buckets of tears so have huge empathy for you and anyone who loses their home to these disasters. Hugs, Sheila

Block after block burned to the ground with people still in that surreal cognitive dissonance or shock from the trauma of destruction that happened SO fast. I hope there are counselors who will surreptiously step up to the plate and help at the evac centers.
On a news stations I watched this morning, it was said that one of their field reporters had never seen so many grown men crying, in his life. It's so sad to see the people grieving and all their possessions gone but seeing the animals, esepcially cats, the ones not too damaged that is (and the lightly singed ones, omg), meowing plaintively outside for their owners and a rescue, well that melts me down, totally. There is not a living soul in these burned out or smoke-filled areas that aren't suffering. I've seen very few people with masks too- :( The toxic materials that are burning into the air must be in mind boggling amounts.
I pray this too shall pass and God help these people through another night of high winds, coming up!

Might be the tears mostly for their pets. The worst I ever seen my dad cry was when his cat Molly got hit by a car and perished I called him on the phone just after he found her...it was shocking to hear how deep his love for that cat went. Even my bro was there said he never heard a grown man cry like that (he was one of those manly men too). Molly he named her and she followed him everywhere and even on long trips in the car she just get right in no need for a carrier. She had a unique personality and chose him as he was walking through the woods one day he found her as a kitten. He came across lots of cats that way...it was kinda like they found him.

they've been calling for any available counselors to get to the evacuation centers to help those folks. Well at least they got out with their lives, the rest can be replaced as I heard so many of them say but losing one's home, kind of like losing a loved one.
I'm still praying for miracle rain. Anadel park is such a beautiful place or at least it was, lots of meadows with those big jack rabbits jumping about. I felt like Alice in Wonderland way back when we last visited years ago. Blessings to you and your thoughts!!

mine too Redheart, I just heard that there are so far 21 fatalities and an awful number of missing people - 540 missing!! I suspect that is because folks don't have cell phone service, can't call their loved ones, at least I hope that's the reason.

me too, it's beyond sad...latest I saw is that several of the fires will merge ...
my sister from Finland visited here and left just before the fires started, she saw all of those areas in full fall gorgeousness, she texted me yesterday being stunned by the images she has seen in the news out there...
it's hard to imagine what's taking place.... after you see all that destruction the mind goes numb...
I'll forward this vid to her...
P/S how's your little shelter doggie, we should all just hold our loved ones real tight, the furry ones included...

little Dexter doggy is doing pretty good, just got a bath and hair cut yesterday. My SIL wants to visit us this Christmas, says she just got a 4 year old pit bull from the pound. Now she's mad at us because we don't allow anyone with pit bulls on our property or home. Pit bulls can be very sweet but the breed accounts for 67% of dog mauling deaths in the US. I've seen too many pit bulls kill little dogs and our Dexter is so small, he'd be prime dinner!
Anyway, that aside, I'm going to bake cookies or something to cheer me up, seeing all this destruction has made me so very sad.

Hmmm earthquake...nope, nope, I'm looking down the list right now. It clearly states locusts, then volcano, then earthquake. Oh, there there should be burning hail in there somewhere and a few boils.

Redhart, -I just mentioned on the dreams board how the CA earthquake authority has been advertising heavily during these past few weeks, -do they know something the rest of us are unaware ...
though re the quakes, they come up just like that, no prior warning...
that is why everyone in cali should have their emergency supplies ready...
when my sister visited from Finland recently we went grocery shopping, -she said , -do you always buy that much food, I had to explain most of the food was into the emergency storage ...
I always have at least 30 gallons of spring water stored...
I saw a story where a man during these recent fires saved his house literally with bottles of water, he and his neighbors fought the fire with bottled water...
Date: October 12, 2017 at 13:40:30 From: Redhart, [DNS_Address] Subject: Re: drone video of Santa Rosa burned areas, made me cry
I don't think they have any head's up on seismic activity in any specific way. The state has several known areas that are overdue for quakes. And, you never know about faults that are unknown, or little known, that could pop off something while everyone's looking the other way. But, the earthquake authority does drives at certain times of the year and October is emergency preperation month. I would not take it as a sign anything beyond the normal background concern is going on at this point.
Totally agree that everyone should have an emergency kit. We keep one in a car carrier. It can be thrown on top of the car to bug out in case of fire, as well (or flood..whatever the need is).
I had this kit ready to go (same carrier!) back in 1989 and within a couple hours, had a tent up in the front yard, camp stoves, dinnergoing, radio running and all we needed to get through the next few days.
These kits aren't just for quakes, but can be for any sudden disaster that may hit
We also have an RV with generator (jokingly called the back up house) and water if something happens to the main house.
Plans on the "fly" in the middle of any diaster are sometimes lacking. It's good to have a kit ready, and a plan. Plan for the worst, always hope for the best.
It's not just for california, either. Most areas of this country have their own, unique disasters that can strike. A little prep can go a long way.

I can tell you pets in hurricanes get priorities at county shelters they make room for them so folks don't feel need to stay or to leave their pet behind if they have to evacuate (that's a law here in FL room is made in shelters for pets, dunno about livestock though figure they may get the worst) Maybe there is a bit more time with hurricanes as there might be more time to prepare. I figure it's the animals who are wild that might get hurt the worst but then again I figure they have an instinct when to move and where to go with weather, etc. Fires are a different story and they do move FAST. In Florida we lost more wild critters to a freezing snap back in 2010 if I recall proper...that was the last cold spell we had and it was shivers and since then it's been too hot.
I knew a woman who lived in a flood zone here and we had bad rains (no cane though) and her horses were in the barn and no way out a couple of years ago and no one able to get to them to let them out... so sad.

I know, it really got to me that so much news centers around politics when all of this destruction is happening in real time. Makes me so aware of putting together a "bug out bag" in case of fire, quake, floods, etc. Cherish your loved ones, pets because none of us ever know what's next!
