Subject: Cherokee fire (near Oroville Calif) - no calif multiple fires

we have a big outbreak of wildfires in northern
california right now. They seem to have come in on
the winds, which have kicked up big time in the last
24 hours. I know we started getting gusts over 40mph
over night, some of the gust passing 60mph (chasing
screens and potted plants this morning, securing
things). Red flag warnings are up all over the state
now.

Sonoma and Napa have some terrible fires--just posted
an article up on the Environmental board about that.

Here's another fire (from a fire-related email list):
CHEROKEE FIRE Wind driven fire, running amok, 0-600
acres in about half an hour and still running. NASTY
area, top of Table Mountain, lots of folks with lots
of animals being evacuated, additional fire just
reported up in the Berry Creek area, high fuel, wind
driven, needing a lot of resources we don't have.

(response-time stamp 12:08am this morning) via
Twitter that it has jumped Highway 70 and gotten
established on the other side and growing. Then there
is the life hazard firestorms in LNU right now.

(response w/two more fires mentioned time stamped
1:45am) There are also two (at least) additional
fires southeast, one of which is now pushing into
Bangor proper. Evacuations in progress, immediate
need. VERY low on resources. This is the Cascade
fire, started in Yuba and took off.

(response 1:50am)and the McCourtney Fire is raging
near Grass Valley with west side of town in the dark
and structures burning.

(new thread/Diablo winds 2:38am) LNU (Lake-Napa-
Sonoma Unit CalFire) has the Tubbs Fire, Atlas Fire,
Nunn Fire, Partrick Fire, Adobe Fire, and Sulphur
Fire.

NEU (Nevada-Yuba-Sutter Unit CalFire ) has the
McCourtney Fire and Cascade Fire.

BEU (Butte Unit CalFire) also has the Cascade Fire as
well as the Cherokee Fire.

Many of these fires have destroyed structures and
sent people scrambling for their lives and lives may
have been lost in some cases.

The most serious fire at this hour is the Tubbs Fire
which began around Tubbs Lane in Calistoga and burned
over the Maacama Mountains to the west tearing
through Petrified Forest and Mark West and is now
into Santa Rosa and threatening to jump Highway 101
to the west.

(response 2:51am) I meant to say BTU for Butte Unit
and the Tubbs Fire has now jumped Highway 101 near
Hopper..... also there is now the La Porte Fire in
BTU which may or may not be an extension of the
Cascade Fire in NEU.

**note, "Diablo Winds" are the northern california
label for the (usually fall) easterly strong dry
winds. In southern california, they are often called
the "Santa Ana" winds. Same effect--warm, dry, high
wind condition that can push and turbo fires from
spot to raging faster than you can pack a car and get
outta there.

**I am not located near any of these fires (at least
so far, we're good in so sierras at my location). Red
flag warnings are definitely up (like my window
screens).

Please report in if you are from one of these active
fire locations and let us know you are safe.

ok, this is on yahoo news now....

NAPA COUNTY, Calif. -- Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning buildings, forcing hundreds of evacuations and injuring several people, reports CBS San Francisco. The Atlas Peak fire was the largest, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, a fire near Calistoga had burned several buildings, sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns and prompted mandatory evacuations along several roads. Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department said fires had also erupted in Santa Rosa, Windsor and Sebastopol. The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking ..

Subject: No. calif fires - update

Received an update (9:15 timestamp) by email group:
" Morning numbers are running like this:
Cherokee fire, 4K acres.
LaPorte (possible portion of NEU's Cascade), 3K acres.

zero containment, minimal resources. Winds will
continue today.

Air Tac over Cherokee just left to check on a possible
new fire in the Feather Falls area.

Bangor four corners immediate area, 15 structures
lost."

Most of this information is coming from fire scanners
or directly from the line (a lot of these people are
retired or active firefighters) which members of the
group follow, gleaning information from.

From Calif disaster list:
"Evacs closest to the Honey fire are remaining
mandatory but those further away have been reduced to
warnings (yay!). EB Skyway is now open but WB will
remain closed until cleared in the morning due to trees
down etc.

All evacuations in the Bangor/Oroville area remain in
force, although I believe some may have downgraded"

I'm following CALfire on twitter for updates and the Press Democrat which is pretty good at updates with video of fire. 12 fires so far from Healdsburg to Napa, whole wineries have burned down, diaries, KMart, gun shop, entire mobile home park burned to the ground. Kaiser hospital evacuated. Never seen anything like this as it's right in the city of Santa Rosa.
Where's Petra? She lives in the area.

I dunno where she is. I'm hoping people from that area
start checking in on the board.

Sounds like a real nightmare. Praying down here (and also
saying a prayer they don't follow the wind
here...watching for smoke. Should turn on my scanner).

Thanks for the update, Sheila.
