'The State of Florida Emergency Hotline has been activated 24/7. For up to date information regarding Hurricane Irma, call 1-800-342-3557.
In order to find a hurricane shelter close to you, you can text the word "shelter" and your zip code to the number 4-F-E-M-A or 4-3-3-6-2.
Text FLPREPARES to 888777 to receive updates from the Florida Division of Emergency Management.
If you live in the City of Gulfport, residents can reach the Informational Call Center at 727-893-1000 from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.'
More numbers at links, including insurance and Coast Guard. Only some shelters allow pets. This is why so many pets are left behind, no doubt. I mean, how many days did cities have to prepare for this storm? Sheesh. Also imagine how many mentally ill are wandering the streets unawares and unconcerned about the threat to their survival? There are 18 homeless shelters in W. Palm Beach alone and probably many more numbers of homeless in S. Florida. What percentage of homeless, including the mentally ill, made it to the shelters?
Turns out my uncle is in a W. Palm Beach shelter. His wife, who is his caretaker was not allowed a cot so she brought a yoga mat and pillows. They have a small, 20sq per person. I can't imagine the bathroom situation with special needs people. Of course, they don't have enough nurses nor any advanced medical care that likely most of these people need. They have a place to squat, with a roof overhead, electricity, and the food they brought - that's IT. They drove for hours to arrive at the shelter 4am this morning. They must be dog tired.
My aunt has a funny hurricane story, though a little pathetic. From a Costco somewhere in Florida, a man in line for the cashier has a gigantic bag of Cheetos and a large bag of jelly beans. He says, 'This is all I need to ride out the storm'! Okaaaaay.
My uncle used to study hurricanes. He says due to the low pressure of this monster storm, the winds are going to deliver brutal blows. They drove to the shelter so his car is outside in a parking lot. He's afraid he's going to lose his house that is a little further south, very close to the beach, and his car. He's fighting bone marrow cancer and diabetes II, with a sore foot from recent surgery. Lord Have Mercy on them and please spare his house and car. There are likely no atheists in these trenches.

Oh p.s. I think it's the law in Florida shelters have to accept pets and they provide a special area for them. It's the hotels, etc. that are not required by law or any other place that may offer shelter outside the Florida government shelters that is not required to accept pets.
I did see a restaurant in the area somewhere that was offering shelter for people and pets and planning a hurricane party so folks would not stress out and focus so much with all the fear porn news.
