"In 164 BCE, the Maccabees captured Jerusalem, a significant early victory. The subsequent cleansing of the temple and rededication of the altar

-- Why the Maccabees Aren’t in the Bible
The books that tell the Hanukkah tale didn't make it into the Hebrew Bible -- but they are in the Catholic one.

Why isn’t The Book of Maccabees in the Jewish Bible, the story of Jewish Hanukkah?

19⬆️Votes response:

The main reason is that modern day Judaism comes from the Pharisee sect which believes in rabbinic interpretation and the oral
tradition, whereas the Hasmonean dynasty and the Maccabees represented the Sadducee sect, a break away sect that sought to take a
literalist reading and ignore the oral tradition. Although surviving the Greek conquest and rededicating the Temple was worth
celebrating (hence Hanukkah) subsequent actions by the Hasmonean dynasty, including buying the office of high priest and
encouraging the high priest to deviate from long standing tradition and interpretation in relation to how to perform the Yom
Kippur service are among many reasons that the rabbis wished to minimize the canonization, celebration, and remeberance of the
Sadducees and the Hasmonean dynasty.

Who Were the Pharisees?

The Pharisees weren't just a group of men, but a social movement and a school of thought during the time of the second temple.
They were most likely founded around 167 BCE and ended in 73 CE, though the principles that the Pharisees practiced at the time
helped form the Rabbinic Judaism that is practiced today.
