Dr. John Bergsma, a prominent theologian, contends that excavations in Jordan provide substantial proof that one of the Bible's most dramatic and improbable narratives may indeed be factual. Bergsma asserts that archaeological findings in Jordan corroborate the existence of the biblical city of Sodom. Prior research had already indicated that the ancient city of Tell el-Hammam, located in the southern Jordan Valley, suffered a catastrophic fate—a revelation that Dr. John Bergsma, a theology professor at Ohio's Franciscan University, believes aligns with the biblical account. As per the Book of Genesis, God unleashed brimstone and fire upon the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in response to the sins of their inhabitants, resulting in their complete obliteration. Similar destruction patterns were uncovered at Tell el-Hammam, leading Bergsma to reevaluate the credibility of the biblical narrative. He pointed to signs of extreme heat detected on skeletons and pottery fragments unearthed by archaeologists, suggesting a possible impact from an asteroid. Does this unearthed site at Tell el-Hammam represent the biblical Sodom? Around 3,600 years ago, Tell el-Hammam thrived as a city, surpassing both Jerusalem and Jericho in size and strength. However, its prosperity abruptly vanished. The absence of signs of a siege in the ruins suggested that the city and its neighboring area were not subjected to military attack. (credit: Tell El-Hammam Excavation Project) Bergsma received insight into some remarkable discoveries from Steven Collins, the chief archaeologist at Tell el-Hammam. Among these discoveries were pottery shards coated with trinitite, a glassy substance formed when an atomic bomb detonates in a desert, as Bergsma explained. Additionally, human remains were uncovered, with skeletons intact up to the mid-spine, above which only scorch marks remained. These findings provide substantial evidence that a tremendous burst of heat from the sky incinerated the twin cities on the Jordanian side of the river. Steven Collins likened the devastation to the Tunguska event of 1908, in which a massive asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere over Siberia, causing widespread destruction. He added the proposed airburst would have been larger the Tunguska event, which had 1,000 times more energy than the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima." Remarkably, this cataclysmic event also appears to have produced substantial quantities of salt, as noted by James Kent, an associate professor of earth sciences at the University of California – a detail that may remind some of the story of Lot's wife, who turned into a pillar of salt following the destruction of Sodom. While Collins is confident in his conclusions, some archaeologists have accused him of prematurely drawing conclusions without sufficient field evidence. The story of Sodom and its sister city, Gomorrah, ranks among the most well-known tales in the Bible. It recounts Abraham's negotiations with God to spare Sodom, a name synonymous with sin, in order to protect its few righteous inhabitants. However, God's response was unwavering: "And He turned over these cities and the entire plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and the vegetation of the ground," as recorded in the Book of Genesis. The morning after, Abraham witnessed the aftermath: "And he looked over the face of Sodom and Gomorrah and over the entire face of the land of the plain, and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the earth had risen like the smoke of a furnace." |

Or (Scrolling through my library of pages of old unpublished scripts of old...): maybe it (5 cities) was destroyed by a process similar to an initial stage star creation event but which terminated early...due to finite fuel / energy (by design). (Had it been energized unchecked the earth would have been severely remodeled - shall we say) Also "maybe" Lot's wife was turned to salt because all the running escapees where carrying bags of bitumen on their backs - which provided a form of protection (unbeknownst to them in other than a conventional sense or at all). Bitumen was a commodity of commerce back then and provided income / barter products to Lot's family. When Lot's wife turned around to look at the blinding "2nd sun" in the sky she inadvertently pivoted her bitumen "shield" such that it was behind her hanging on her back. Thus she was no longer protected. Thus the bitumen bags "shield" could not block the rays of energy impinging her unlike the protected family members whom obeyed Lot when he said unto them "Don't look back !!". (Maybe) Lot had ordered all including his wife "not to look back" because the "angels" told him to tell them that? They chose "a substitute set of words" to say instead of explaining the "bitumen shield concept" as they had no time to explain "physics and chemistry" whilst making a hasty escape from the ongoing annihilation/ conflaguration. Lot's wife disobeyed Lot and perished. This gave rise to the concept (seen elsewhere in the Bible) that a wife must obey her husband in all matters including seemingly trivial ones or else she shall surely perish. This implies that a man's / husband's wisdom and judgement in all (even trivial) affairs is always superior to a woman's /wive's. Thus no women should be put in (significant) decision making positions (in their family or elsewhere). Also disobedient wives will be punished (sometimes "unto death by forces outside the husband's realm of control - thus holding him without condemnation by "the crowd"). No doubt Lot's children obeyed his every word henceforth / thereafter.... Maybe there are more "things to be discovered regarding Sodom & G. (& 3 other cities)" because it was a real event"? Maybe those things are both in the physical realm and in the "teaching lessons-wise" sense. For example maybe when the Bible says "Be fruitful and multiply" it is not just a friendly suggestion from God for you to pursue at your leisure / pleasure. Rather it is a primary mission directive which you are to carry out postehaste pronto and the punishment for not doing so is death (by whatever form and approach angle it may take - perhaps in a mental sense too.) The implied lesson is that: "Those who contradict this directive will perish (by various forms and designs possibly by their own authorship, handiwork, and design - perhaps also in the mental sense as well ). So the dialogue in the cited article seems to be heading in the right (meteoric) direction...however the parties involved need to expand to involve those others with sufficient backgrounds to assess the depth of their findings and the implications thereof. (I'll now return my dusty old scripts back into their humidity controlled environmental containers & take off the protective gloves & tyvex suit. Sodom's fate was sealed when it's depraved inhabitants tried to gang rape the heavenly messenger angels: The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet. There was also an asteroid or meteorite that wiped out a bunch of Homo Erectus 1.83 million years ago in Malaya. Maybe God was offended by their name :) |

There was no Biblical universal flood. There was a massive flood in the Tigris Euphrates valley that wiped everything out. Noah's flood is based on that. It is true that there are flood legends in many cultures but that is because humans tend to settle in river valleys where there is access to water, transportation and food. Eventually all river valleys have great floods. It is true there are ancient sea fossils on mountains but they are from hundreds of millions of years ago. That is plenty of time for mountain ranges to rise up. |

Nice video. The producer is not claiming that there was an universal flood that covered the whole Earth just that there was massive flooding in the Sahara. You are just projecting your own beliefs. I am sure that there have been massive cataclysmic flood events in the last several billion years but Noah's flood is a fairy tale. |
