New York (Knewz) — A record low number of Americans say the Bible is the literal word of God, a new poll claimed.
A recent Gallup survey found that 20 percent said the book is literal, down from 24 percent during a similar survey in 2017. The amount is the lowest mark in the survey’s 40-year history. In the mid-1980s the figure was twice as high. Gallup found that a new high, 29 percent, said the Bible is a collection of fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by man. It marks the first time that there have been more people who back that idea over the Bible being the literal word.
About 49 percent of people found a middle ground and said the book is inspired by God, not to be taken literally.
The drop in the number of people who say the Bible is the literal word of God has decreased along with the number of people who say that religion is very important in their life, Gallup found. In 2020, more than 50 percent described religion as important. Today, that figure sits at 44 percent.
Among Christians, about 25 percent said the Bible was the literal word, 58 percent described it as the inspired word and 16 percent said it was an ancient book of fables.
Roughly 30 percent of Protestants said the Bible is literally true, compared to 15 percent of Catholics who described it the same way, the poll found.
“Americans’ interpretations of the Bible are important, because the Bible is often used as the basis for policy positions on moral and values issues, including such things as abortion and gay and lesbian relations,” Gallup noted. “Some more conservative Protestant groups use a literal interpretation of passages from the New Testament as the basis for their belief that women should not be in positions of religious leadership in churches.”

If God is omniscient, why did he create a being that would rebel against him?
