So.... music and art are magical things. And sometimes what a musician writes, in this case, Sting, comes out as far more than he or she ever intended. That has always been the case with Sting's song here. This song is one of the best accidental, unintended "hymns" ever written. I often belt it out while looking out the window up into the sky or when driving through a beautiful piece of nature.
The song so fits my sentiments in the middle of a lying, cheating President of the United States, cowardly politicians, and a deceived, idolatrous, power-drunk American church.
In the midst of all the ugliness, the lies, the insanity - there remains a very real God and Jesus Christ. And if I ever lost my faith in God and Jesus Christ, there would truly be nothing left for me to do. I would be lost.
I don't think it was an unintended hymn of praise-- especially when you view the video he made with the song and all its symbols. ((the lyrics, when I close my eyes, I see your face)) especially, even though he has something to say about the you part as quoted below) Born and raised a Roman Catholic, it seems he did lose his faith in the 'holy church', but not King Jesus or God. The throne he is sitting on in the video is a replica of the throne of Britain, to house the stone underneath the coronation chair, whereon it is also known as Jacobs pillar/pillow stone aka as stone of scone, which btw was returned to Scotland's rightful owners, back in '96.. so its interesting he wrote the song several years prior to it's return. Song was written/copywritten in 1993. Stone was returned in 1996- see article at above link. Queen Elizabeth was coronated upon that stone and chair in 1953. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=queen+elizabeth+coronated+on+the+stone+of+scone+chair&atb=v53-3__&iax=images&ia=images&iai=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.show-the-house.com%2Fsitebuildercontent%2Fsitebuilderpictures%2FEIIRonStoneofSconeCoronationThrone.JPG

Its also important he says he isn't a Christian anymore, same as me, I too was in the Catholic religion as a child but left that at 11, then later more years in the Protestant and left that, but never leaving God or Jesus. I stopped being a 'Christian' in 1989. Its a wonderful song of praise.
And I agree with the lyrics: have lost my faith in politicians, not that I had much to begin with, having seen the hypocrisy and lies of both sides.
https://hollowverse.com/sting/ Sting's religious background
Sting said this about the song: "The song is in two distinct parts. The first part is about the things I’ve lost faith in. It’s quite easy to be precise about the things I’ve lost faith in – politics, media, science, technology, the things that everybody has, and yet I along with most other people have a great deal of hope, and a feeling that things will and can get better. So what do we place our faith in I can’t define that as easily as I can define what I don’t believe in anymore. So I haven’t defined it, I’ve just said if I ever lose my faith in you, and “You” could be my producer, it could be faith in God, it could be faith in myself, or it could be faith in romantic love. It could be all of those things, I don’t define it. I think it’s important not to define it, because once you can define something it evaporates. I think it’s important in this day and age when we are dictated to by music television what a particular song is about, that the old ambiguity that songs had can be retained." https://genius.com/Sting-if-i-ever-lose-my-faith-in-you-lyrics
