house and your wife and children are starving

this is the song that gave me hope that someone out
there cared about people like me ... my mom would go
into the grocery store with just a few pennies and try
to buy enough to feed us ... this was in about 1946 and
she would set me on the counter ... potato and onion and
a little bit of lard at home ... maybe a carrot ... that
was dinner and her still nursing me ... you who scoff at
poverty have probably never seen it ... good riddance to
those who scoff at the terror of starvation ... people
walked around in the ghetto in Warsaw and would just
suddenly collapse and die ... one man sold things so he
could pay his apartment rent so he did not have to die
on the street

this is my seventy-ninth year on the planet and just
about the time of my birth ... my relatives were being
"transported" to the place of dying ... stripped naked
they we run into the "showers" where the zyklon-B was
"issued" to them ... the strongest were always on top
of the pile of corpses and their faces were stretched
with terror ... and I have only found out about this in
the last several years ... a young boy of eight years
and his parents were transported just about this time
... they were all murdered and their corpses were
burned and their remains were just fly ash floating in
the wind ... the charnel house where Hollerith cards
were used for accounting of the names and their vital
statistics ... all very neatly documented ... yes, I
write is all down as a testimonial to human suffering
... someone has to remember the dead and I drew the
short straw

...idiotically think their "religion" gives
them the right to annihilate a religion and a
people of that religion (a religion that was
basically the root of Christianity and whose
Torah was there 100s of years before the
Quran) aren't allowed to do that ever again.

I'd say you drew the long straw. Continue to
educate.

this is where the majority of Jews were sent ... by
train ... in cattle cars ... standing ... no water ...
no food ... and little protection from the elements ...
many did not even survive the transport and almost none
survived the camp

we are promised that a remnant will survive what is
coming to us all ... people just laugh when I suggest
they prepare a "chamber" ... we are allowed to see the
evil that is coming and to prepare for it ... only the
astute will survive ... any of us will be blessed to
have any kind of straw

Critic David Horowitz commented: "Technically speaking,
"Hollis Brown" is a tour de force. For a ballad is
normally a form which puts one at a distance from its
tale. This ballad, however, is told in the second
person, present tense, so that not only is a bond
forged immediately between the listener and the figure
of the tale, but there is the ironic fact that the only
ones who know of Hollis Brown's plight, the only ones
who care, are the hearers who are helpless to help, cut
off from him, even as we in a mass society are cut off
from each other.... Indeed, the blues perspective
itself, uncompromising, isolated and sardonic, is
superbly suited to express the squalid reality of
contemporary America. And what a powerful expression it
can be, once it has been liberated (as it has in
Dylan's hands) from its egocentric bondage! A striking
example of the tough, ironic insight one associates
with the blues (and also of the power of understatement
which Dylan has learnt from Guthrie) is to be found in
the final lines of Hollis Brown:
There's seven people dead on a South Dakota farm,
There's seven people dead on a South Dakota farm,
Somewhere in the distance there's seven new people
born.
