Hi Akira,
Bopp seems to define trolling as responses he doesn't like and therefore posts he doesn't like. It has nothing to do with what trolling really is. This mainly applies to us mere mortals as "the few" are never considered to be trolling even if their "inflammatory or irrelevant" posts would have gotten them booted on most forums around the internet. It is kinda like defining water as dry or fire as cold but it is his ball so we play by his rules no matter how fair they are.
Hell the majority of ryan's posts on these forums over the years meet the definition of trolling as he is a big fan of one line "inflammatory or irrelevant" posts to people he doesn't like.
This is a big reason there are rarely long, intelligent on-topic discussions on these forums. Trolling is sanctioned here but us mere mortals get our posts deleted regardless of how polite, detailed and on topic they are.
Happy New Year
Jim

I've been reading your posts for years and just want to express my appreciation for the contribution you've made here, especially on the science related boards.
You and I obviously disagree on issues, but I've found you usually to be a calm, thoughtful, rational and incredibly patient presence (maybe less so lately, understandably, lol). So thank you for your efforts.
Happy new year to you & your family.

Hi Akira,
Thank you for the kind words. We tend to look at things from different perspectives, but I definitely appreciate your liberal views on things in contrast to my conservative views. The important thing is we aren't aligned to any jackass political party as the truth means more than petty partisan politics.
Happy New Year!

You're right. Dan contributes next to nothing on this site. He can't even back up his hit-and-run smear with an intelligent thought. And that's okay with Bopp now. It wouldn't have been a couple of years ago. I guess it's a sign he's more evolved now.
What a wasteland this place has become.

Hi ao,
How in the hell is it that you don't understand what trolling is either?
4. To post inflammatory or irrelevant material on (an electronic forum) to provoke responses.
While you might not like what I say that doesn't make it trolling. I object to ryan's trolling me all the time (with his inflammatory or irrelevant one line responses) and the lack of fairness on this site. But I'm not one to jump in threads with inflammatory or irrelevant material in order to provoke a response and distract from the discussion. I tend to respond to people with on topic details, facts and data to further the discussion. The fact you oppose what I say doesn't make my detailed responses trolling.
I hope you can get rid of all that anger you have ao. It isn't healthy.
I wish you a Happy New Year
Jim

Hi ao,
> I understand enough to know you're the troll
LOL, you mean even though you don't know the definition you are sure I'm one? I'm a lot of things but not a troll. That is why the definition is important as you folks use the word as a general slur against people you don't like having no clue what the word actually means. My posts tend to have more on topic information than most people on these forums. I'm comfortable taking positions that aren't popular with some people but that isn't trolling.
But hey, you can call me a troll or a refrigerator if that makes you feel better. What you can't do is put forth a logical, on topic response to what I've been posting.
Happy New Year

I’m not sure where you picked up that # 4 but this definition is found when the word trolling is googled:
“A troll is Internet slang for a person who intentionally tries to instigate conflict, hostility, or arguments in an online social community. ... Trolls often use inflammatory messages to provoke emotional responses out of people, disrupting otherwise civil discussion.”
Pointing out sources that have been found over and over to post inaccurate information is not trolling. Especially if done plainly with no personal comments.

I take this as an accusation regarding my posts which Dan disapproved of. Am I correct?
If so, what "inaccurate information" have I posted from the source Responsible Statecraft, the source in question?
Or is this just another hit & run post from you?

Hi etc.,
That is just a more extensive version of the same definition. A troll doesn't try to discuss things but derail discussions. Now ryan has said that source trolling is allowed here... but it most certainly is still trolling as it is done to derail discussions.
And really we know Dan is just trolling with the source thing because he only goes after certain people's sources and he posts things from sources that fail the same media bias website he trolls people with. His goal isn't good sources but to distract discussions initiated by a few specific people here. But don't worry, ryan will protect this type of trolling no matter how blatant Dan is.
How many times have we seen news items that were absolutely true trolled and the discussion distracted from that true news item? It has happened a lot because "truth" isn't the goal. Good sources aren't the goal. It is all about disrupting the discussions on topics that certain people post.
And etc. I'm not one of those people. I'm actually very picky about my sources and don't really do the political thing so I'm not one of the victims of the source trolling. Dan trolls me with brilliant things like claiming Oxford University was "anti vax propaganda" because he didn't like the discussion. He was source trolling when the source was one of the most prestigious universities on the planet because he didn't like what they said! LOL
Have a Happy New Year!

Left - Right and in-between, judging by the journalists who do the actual writing. Seems at least as legitimate as any other source most seem to accept here, more so than some, imo*.
Criticizing the State is anathema to Dan. He frequently accuses me of being unpatriotic, un-American and of hating my country, literally. It doesn't matter to Dan what site I use. I recently posted something from the reputable British Medical Journal. Dan latched on, accusing me of promoting "vaccine hesitancy", and you said nothing.
You are playing the game with every choice you make on this site, whether you want to admit it or not... imo*.

Your rhetoric plays right into the narrative of those who oppose this country, those who wish to do us harm. You criticize and find fault with just about everything concerning this country ignoring pertinent information along the way, tearing us down. You are quick to judge without investigating to find out what may be actually happening behind the scenes. Plus you are selective in your outrage. You are more than willing to sacrifice civilians while promoting what you think foreign policy should be. You are no better than those you criticize, in my opinion.

Hi ryan,
While you have supported source trolling for whatever reason this is an example where the media bias guy doesn't rate that site, no specific criticisms are given and as you say it is a mixed bag, funded by the big, bad right wing boogeyman Koch and the big, bad left win boogeyman Soros. Is Dan really source trolling in this case or just trolling trolling?
This is the problem you have created by sanctioning all this source trolling. With nothing specific on the source Dan responds by posting a variation of the source name.... which can't really be source trolling can it? That was just to distract from an article Dan didn't like. Maybe you should consider advising Dan to use a bit of restraint?
Happy New Year

...what I may say isn't going to change anything around here unless someone for some reason is ready to make changes. It's all our personal perception and belief systems exercising and practicing various drills on the earth plane.
The problem arises when someone thinks their answers are better than someone elses and tries to play the morality card without equally applying the same standards to themselves.
Rarely in life, if ever, have I met someone that was considered "weak" in the morals department that didn't have a few somewhat hidden "winning" hands that I would have missed had I adhered to "groupthink" and not explored that "poor" soul more closely.
A lot of great wisdom on these boards goes unnoticed because of the erroneous and incorrect judgment of others that think they have it all figured out.

...by definition ao, once we emerge on the "earth plane", we're pretty much "at the table".
Actual "awareness" of the table may be more fleeting than one might hope.
In any event, our presence here was probably more of an opportunity than a mistake.
Our presence on EB no doubt raises the stakes and the commitment.

"Pointing out sources that have been found over and over to post inaccurate information is not trolling. specially if done plainly with no personal comments."
Unfortunately etc, a very large percentage of articles these days, from literally all sides of the political spectrum have become tainted and biased to one degree or another. Just a fact of the times we are currently going through.
Better to show restraint, respect, compassion and love for our fellow human beings than to keep opening up old wounds with snark, derision and judgment if it's "higher ground" we are seeking.
Teamwork is probably a better goal than trying to judge those of us who aren't quite perfect yet.
Insults to others are rarely productive in the long run.

...raising the dialogue here to the level of "douchebags" seems to indicate that quality discussion of issues is pretty much a thing of the past on these pages.
You criticize the one line zingers of others but you thrive on them personally...
...kind of like trolling yourself from where I stand.

Welcome to the club.

Always interesting how some of us can do no wrong and others can do no right in your rather arbitrary ranking of friend or foe reality complex.

How about what they "need" once in a while? Or better yet, what "you" need?

...pretty sure "pay grade" has nothing to do with giving people what they need ryan as opposed to what they think they want.
Pretty sure you already know that.
