put in a website & it will show who/what is putting stuff on your computer & tracking you... like say, Rawstory.
A Real-Time Website Privacy Inspector By Surya Mattu
Who is peeking over your shoulder while you work, watch videos, learn, explore, and shop on the internet? Enter the address of any website, and Blacklight will scan it and reveal the specific user-tracking technologies on the site—and who’s getting your data. You may be surprised at what you learn.

Hi Akira,
Very interesting . And oddly news websites seem to be some of the worst.
USAToday.com 43 ad trackers 72 3rd party cookies
CNN.com 36 ad trackers 54 3rd party cookes
MSNBC.com 32 ad trackers 46 3rd party cookies
Fox.com 16 ad trackers 27 3rd party cookies
BBC.com 12 ad trackers 36 3rd party cookies
Huffpost.com 28 ad trackers 32 3rd party cookies
Yet if we jump to sports:
espn.com 8 ad trackers 3 3rd party cookies
Or porn:
pornhub.com 1 ad trackers 1 3rd party trackers
or entertainment info: imdb.com 1 ad tracker 0 3rd party cookies
or weather: wunderground.com 5 ad trackers 1 3rd party cookies
So if you try to stay informed on news you are more exposed on the internet than most other things.
Thanks for sharing.
Jim

Doesn't seem odd since those are all owned by for-profit corporations as far as I'm aware. Sadly, I think the weather channel bought wunderground.com a couple of years ago.

Hi Akira,
Well they are all commercial enterprises out to make a profit. Still the news related websites do much more tracking and snooping of users than sports or entertainment websites.
WeatherUnderground bought Intellicast a couple of years ago, not sure about the weather channel. I still miss intellicast, a nice clean weather website.
Cheers
Jim

Now I had to look, lol. Big surprise - The Weather Channel owns both Weather Underground and Intellicast.
Monopolize, it's the American way, lol.

Intellicast USED to be the 'thing' and place to go!
Always accurate and more or less real time...
Really Sad...

I use a script blocker add-on in my browser. It is a whitelist based system, meaning everything is blocked unless I whitelist it. It is based on the source URL of the script.
There is very little I permanently whitelist. Even on sites I visit every day I still have to manually allow the scripts. But I've come to learn exactly which scripts are needed for each site to give me the functionality I need.
It's crazy funny how some websites render when all the scripts are blocked. Some you just get a blank page. Others (such as google maps) detects the block and complains. While others work just fine except all the blocked ads.
Typically, the root URL is all that's needed. Maybe some additional 3rd party stuff that's needed for interactivity, but is legit. Again, experience, experimentation, and research has taught me over time what's legit and what's intrusive. Many times when I go to a new site I recognize most of the script sources right away.
BTW, I don't whitelist Earthboppin and it works just fine, even though the add-on says there is something being blocked.

that is kinda what little snitch does...it allows you to observe every connection attempt to your mac and choose whether you want to accept it or deny it, with options as to how long...if you need to visit a site that you have blocked parts of its makeup that it requires to load you can just turn it off for a bit... a great l'il partner...

Not quite - it allows you to monitor allow/deny apps on your Mac to make connections outside. I.e apps calling back to a domain to check for updates that serial number legitimate etc.
From their blurb
It can be used to monitor applications, preventing or permitting them to connect to attached networks through advanced rules.
In the case of manually using LS with a web browser you'll be clicking away all day allowing / denying due to cookies etc..
You can with Safari browser use Preferences > Cookies and Website Data , choose to block cookies plus use the option to 'Prevent cross-site tracking'. Though as you mention some websites won't work at all then.
If you don't want to be tracked on the internet best not connect to it.

the nice thing about little snitch is it prevents anything on your computer from accepting or trying to make an external connection...so not just your browser, but any app, from itunes to email to word...i like that flexibility...

that's basically what i said...if a site wants to access my browser it has to be okayed by me...or if one of my apps wants to connect to an outside site i have to okay it...a minor pain when browsing but it gives me pretty good control over who accesses my info...i delete cookies regularly so that's no big deal either...blocks itunes and other stuff if i say so...but if you read akira's article they are quite sneaky...the keystroke stuff should be totally illegal...but probably 90 some percent of folks allow anyone to access their info so google and the rest are getting all the info they need...just not much of mine,,,

Backlight scanner isn't perfect - I ran it on sites that I know have google tracking and Extrawatch* but they came up 'clean'
*See what’s going on on your website in real time. See who’s browsing which pages, information about his country, city, device. This is a great way how to see how your website is being used by the users.

I did no issues w/earthboppin. The Democracy Now site allows google analytics which follows you around the internet. I installed an extension (of course, google's) recommended by the markup site which is supposed to allow you to turn off Google Analytics' data collection. I did it, restarted the computer, went to DN's site and google analytics showed up again, so I don't think the extension even worked but not sure. Annoying. I'll check out snitch, thanks
