Subject: Resetting the computer - BSOD

I have a software problem with my computer and I
need to reset it to the original configuration. I
took it to Best Buy last week because it is still
under warranty, but they said it was not a hardware
problem, it was software and I was going to have to
figure it out on my own.

At least I hope that resetting the computer fixes
the problem.

About 2X a day I get a BSOD and the computer says it
needs to restart....and it does. I get different
messages at the bottom of the BSOD explaining why it
needs to restart..........RTLSYN System...or
something like that .......as well as a Bad Pool(er)
something..

Sometimes when I go to the windows icon in the lower
left and try to restart the computer using the
restart function, I will get a message saying it is
restarting and it will remain there indefinitely
without restarting. I have to hit the power button.

I took it to Best Buy where I bought it and they
said it was not the HD, but the software.

The computer is only 10 months old. I should not be
having this problem. It is a low end HP computer
but it still has Windows 10, AMD6 chip , 500GB HD
and 12GB Ram ( I added 8GB).

It doesn't have the bells and whistles of a touch
screen but the damn thing should still be working 10
months after I bought it.

I copied all the shortcuts I had on my desktop to a
flash drive.

But there are still pics and other things on my C
drive. If I reset the computer do I lose those ?
Do I need to copy them as well?

I was looking at another computer to replace this
one if it goes kaput.

I like my iPhone but I can't bring myself to pay
$1200 for a new Mac when I can pay 400-500 for a PC
that will do the same thing, surf the web and send
email.

I am looking at a Dell with a 7th Generation I3chip,
15 inches 8GB, 1TB Memory and a touch screen. Are
touch screens any better than a traditional screen?
The chip I am currently using is an AMD6. I know
the i3's are low end but are they better than the
AMD6? 1TB is more than I need, so that should be
ample storage.

The other one is a Lenovo with an AMD12 chip, 15
inches, 1 TB memory and 8GB Ram. I am assuming
that the A12 is superior to the A6 I am currently
using.

BTW, I have already tried using Defender, Webroot
and Malware Bytes to clean my computer. Then I used
CCleaner to clean it again as well as the Registry.

So, I have done as much as I can reasonably do to
make sure I am not infected with a virus.

Is resetting the computer the next logical step?

Is one of the computers I listed above any superior
to the other? They are both about 350-375.

Thanks for any suggestions.......

I have never heard of bad RAM but then I don't talk
about this stuff everyday.

I forget the brand name but it was relatively well
known.

I'll check it out tonight.

Thanks

I have had that problem with RAM before.
Try removing it (and put the old RAM back) to see if that fixes the problem.
The RAM may not actually be "bad." Sometimes motherboards can be picky about RAM.
If removing the added RAM solves the problem, then check the computer manufacturers site to find a listed RAM that has proven to be compatible.
Also, some motherboards do not support full RAM speed when all slots are filled. Is the RAM clock speed set to automatic in the BIOS?

For BOSD, RAM is my first usual suspect, and a failing hard drive is second.

I added the RAM after I bought the computer, I think
it was around January when I added it.

I immediately noticed an increase in the response rate
though.
I have never spent much time in the BIOS, I know it
exists but that is about it.

I'll check to see if it is automatic though.

Thanks

Someone else suggested that I apply a new layer of
thermal paste. So I went by Best Buy on the way
home from work and bought some.

I have heard of it but I never used it before
because it was not necessary. I applied it under
the fan and a few other places as suggested by a
Youtube video. Then I blew out the fan, trying to
clean it as much as possible.

So far, so good.

I have been running the laptop for about an hour and
it has not failed me yet. And the fan is almost
silent.

If it fails again, then I will replace the RAM with
some new sticks. Although the 8MB I added after I
bought it (from Samsung) seem to have worked well so
far. It was amazing how much faster the PC ran
after I added the extra RAM.

I don't know if it is a coincidence but my
connectivity has improved as well. I am getting 3,4
bars instead of my usual 2,3.
It may or may not be related.

Many thanks for everyone's help here.

I don’t know anything about computer hardware, but one problem might be the 8 GB of RAM that you added. The above is about someone who had added 8 GB and found that the BSOD was because of the added RAM. But that’s just one possibility.

Hey John;

What happened to Bible-discussion?

He was going to change the format but then killed it
altogether.

Bummer!

Roger

hi Rogerh, some of the scientific-types have missed you here on EB. Petra might be in Italy (?) doing Earthquake work. EB'ers are wondering about her because she has a residence in Santa Rosa (?).

Yes, I wondered what happened at Bible Discussion. The owner apparently changed his mind, and just took down the whole website. I noticed that you posted about 10,000 times, while I posted a few hundred times. You and Dottie had some long discussions.

Hi John;

I'm always around, just don't post much.

Could be. She got a contract or funding from some
group over there somewhere.

That many? Could well be, it was my favorite site and
I really miss it.

I liked Dottie even tho I totally disagreed with her.

I imagine running a site like that was like herding
cats. More trouble that it's worth probably.

Roger

Thank you for your acknowledgement....no one else seems to
be concerned. Unfortunately this hit me like a ton of
bricks...I never anticipated this outcome for Petra, she was
always the fighter. God rest her soul, she will be
remembered by so many.

a lot of folks here were concerned about petra... there have been some long threads in the past couple of months wondering where she has been and asking if anyone has any knowledge of her, especially after the fires...thanks for passing on the information...

I see the response now Mr. Bopp and I am in tears to see how
many loved her like I did. She helped mold me into the
person I am today and I will miss her terribly. Thank you
for all you do. Petra will be missed, the voice of truth
and wisdom has gone on to higher places. An angel has
entered the heavens.

Mr. Bopp, do you back up your files to the Cloud like
Google Drive or even Apple?

I wonder how safe it is to have all your personal
information online.

I don't like the idea of Google, Apple or FB knowing
so much about me.

If you go to "All Forums" on the side bar to the left you can see if
your message posted (or "View Latest") . Other than that I don't
know but I saw your initial post on "All Forums" before I saw your
others.

Thanks, it is posting in the Tech section now but I
did not see it until you posted your reply.

I don't normally search the All Forums link, but it's
odd that it would be found in the All Forums link but
not the Tech link......

Thanks
