I use CCleaner, I used it today.

1. I also use malware bytes, MSFT Defender and
Regseeker.

2. Another thing you can do is go to

History....(the 3 dots ) and delete everything 'from
the beginning of time'

this will be in settings...

3. Then scroll to the bottom and expand advanced
settings

4. Scroll back up and go to
content settings....cookies...all cookies and site
data.......then delete everything /remove all.

then scroll up and go to ..

5. Search ....manage search engines...
X out and delete all the ones you don't use
regularly like google....delete AOL and any others
you see that you don't normally use.

6. Then go to the windows icon in the bottom left
and find windows administrative tools .... then
defragment and optimize drives. Make sure it is
scheduled to defrag at least once a week....

7. Delete everything from the Recycle Bin...it's
amazing what's in there.

8. Go to the Taskbar at the bottom and right
click......go to Task Manager.......Startup....it
will show you all the programs that startup
automatically when you log in. If it says enabled
and you don't use it, then right click and disable
it. You can still use the program but you have to
click it on. This saves a lot of startup time if
you have too many open.

If you do this once a week, at least every other
week......it will help keep your computer fresh and
clean..or about as bug free as you can get.

It might take a little while the first time you do
it, but if you do it regularly it won't take much
time on each successive cleanup.

Just a few ideas, it's what I do.

thanks Raymond....it is freezing up more and more, my techie says my screen light is going too...the dell support scan says I need a new hard drive and the wireless adapter is not good too....I probably need a new computer, dang, I love this one and all my programs I have paid lots of money for are on this one and with XP, so not even sure they would run on a different system....I am going to do what you said though to keep on trying!...:-) kay

Raymond, good recommendations. Cleaning out your internet history is a weekly thing for me.

CCleaner when you run it, it should dump all temp files, recycle been, cache, cookies, everything. So you should not have to go and do all the other things.

The Defrag and optimize are good to do but usually not necessary unless it is a very old machine, then it will free up space.

The CCleaner also has a registry cleaner. This will help speed up your computer by getting rid all except the last versions.

You are right about the extra steps.

It's not necessary to defrag very often.

If it is scheduled to be done weekly, it will run in
the background and you'll never know it.

URL: https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER

I have used CCleaner by piriform and it is great for cleaning registries, temp files, trash can, etc. Make sure you go to the link I put here, sometimes some other links will side step you to a different program.

You might also try blowing the dirt out of the fan
with some 'canned air'. The fan can accumulate a lot
of dust.

If you are handy with a screwdriver, you might want to
try buying some new RAM for your computer to make it
faster. Everything else will be the same but it will
run faster and certainly be cheaper than a new
computer.
