...is when you're going to grow a pair of a balls and actually moderate your forums, ie get rid of the trouble makers.
This has nothing to do with disagreeing on opinions or ideas or beliefs. It has everything to do with behavior and how people treat each other.
You seem to think that leaving the board wide open is supporting freedom of expression. All you are doing is promoting chaos and anarchy caused by a few bad people.
Every now and then you get fed up with it and storm off, shutting down forums or threatening to shut the board down for good. Well, maybe if you actually took control of things you wouldn't have the problems that keep coming around... again and again and again.
Sorry for the rant, but dealing with these fucknuts gets tiresome.

|
|
It's painfully obvious my efforts are for naught. So I'm not going to continue dragging it on any further, save for these final thoughts.
It's apparent I am not alone in my feelings about the problems with this website. That is encouraging.
Yet, it's also apparent I'm about the only one who thinks things could or even should be changed. That is discouraging.
I thank those who think positively of me and have expressed it. Thank you. That is encouraging.
For those who think negatively, well....
I know it seems like I'm just being a whining pain in the ass, and you're probably right. And it's not the first time I've tried to argue for change. But I know I am right on this one, as sure as knowing the ocean is composed of water and the sun will rise tomorrow.
But trapper may actually be right, "nobody gives a fuck." Certainly not enough to matter.
Oh well.
There's a blog I ran across some time back. It's mostly about programming, and of course I found it because I was researching a solution to a programming problem for some software I was writing. But the blog was interesting enough that I started reading more entries. And then by chance I happened upon one very relevant to the present discussion. And from that one entry I found several more. I found them very enlightening.
See, the blog author is someone who writes software for and has started and run chat/forum websites. Big websites. Major websites. Ones that I have read before. Ones that are free and open to anyone, and can be posted to anonymously even. And he knows a thing or two about online communities and how they can be poisoned by bad behavior.
Perhaps it's just the way I have been trying to make the argument. So instead, I'll just refer anyone still reading this to a few blog entries. Maybe those author's arguments will be more persuasive. They'll take time to read, and if you do have the time I encourage you to try following some of the embedded links. Good stuff can't always be summarized in a paragraph or two.
Ryan REALLY needs to read these.

you are spot on Brian and wish there were some way to make this a friendlier forum. I was just told to "butt out" by trapper, a repeat offender who has been offed frequently by mr bopp and trust me, I've never been told that by anyone anywhere no matter how massively we disagreed on any subject!
Maybe Ryan should have a "let it all hang out" so that all this male dominated testosterone could have a place to vent, such that it would not appear on the other forums, I don't know!
What I do know is that your thoughts are in line with my own and I hope the message gets through to our moderator. I doubt it though but appreciate your posts always.

What about people like David/Horst who take their vitriol to the subject line? he posts his thoughts in the subject and leaves the body blank, and then posts ad nauseum for days. He does this precisely because he knows people would not click on his messages otherwise.

lol true. I just run down the "who" is posting list these days and click on people I know can actually have conversations (not always ones I agree with, btw). Horst, I decided long ago, is a waste of my time...which I don't have as much of these days. So, I read a lot more selectively. You know, people who actually common sense, logic and a modicum of civility, and not attempting to bully or sell me the conspiracy agenda du joir.

I often want to laugh when I see his posts, especially when he's on a tangent and vomits them continuously, ranting into oblivion. I frequently avoid that other guy who trolled you. Some of these people take themselves uberseriously & expect everyone else should as well, c'est la vie. On the other hand, there are some insightful, cool people here who have interesting sources & observations to share & I just try to mine for those. I think I understand Mr. Bopp's m.o. We're all adults here. But most importantly, be kind with yourself and don't give silly people the power to unsettle you... and laugh more!

"Bopp provides a free forum"
That's not a valid argument. Most forums are free. In fact, I don't know of any that aren't. But none of the others I've ever used would even tolerate one tenth the behavior that happens here.
Look at it in real life terms. Walking through life is free. Go anywhere free and open to the public. What do you think would happen to anyone acting in that real world location the way many do here in this online community?
At the very least they would have been asked to leave and to never come back. At worst, a few would have been arrested and charged with various infractions. If Earthboppin were a real world physical venue, it probably would have been shut down a long time ago for failure to maintain orderly conduct and security for it's patrons.

Candace, I understand what you mean. I 'get it'. I realize that my own words and way of saying it can very easily be flipped around and pointed back at me.
But I feel willing to take a little heat to attempt to draw attention to what I feel is a greater endemic issue. Sometimes someone has to stand up and just say it even if it's offensive. Sometimes the truth is offensive.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Death is offensive. What we call life here is was stolen and death puts it in chains and calls it life...it's in me and once I would have used those words. Life goes on life is good...we abide in a artificial way mostly...a pill keeps my flesh going...that is a dead thing. I wear this shell and it falls off and my true life walks out of this "world". My hope is to be released from this prison of pain soon.
Forgive me I mean no offense, I think you realize that about me...I just read it and well felt moved to respond. I want for your life to twinkle and shine and cast of the thing this world calls life that is death.
In the spirit of understanding, of hope...truly, ~Eve

No, it's not. If that's what you truly feel, then you need to talk to someone; counselor, shrink, priest, a trusted friend, whatever.
Some things in life may be offensive. And some people may be offensive. And if some one is being excessively offensive then they should be held accountable for their actions.
I have a saying, "people get away with things because people let them get away with things." People get away with offensive behavior because others let them get away with it. Ignoring a problem does not make it go away.
Societies and communities work by having rules and boundaries. Without them, societies and communities invariably fall into disarray. Just look at the world around you. I agree, much of it is offensive.
Do we have to put up with it?
The whole point of my original post is to call out the fact that these boards are the way they are because that's the way people let them become. And the ultimate arbiter, Ryan, gets what he lets it become. By not controlling those who cannot control themselves he cultivates the mess we get every now and then. That old saying, "you reap what you sow". Or is this what Ryan wants? But even without Ryan, the users of the forum as a community can also stand up to those who push the boundaries and break the rules. Or is this what YOU want, Karen?

Just asking her a question. A question that everyone should be asking themselves. Would the behavior seen on these boards be tolerated in person in real life? Why should it be any different online?
Besides, she's the one "scolding" me here. I have no beef with her. Heck, I probably haven't even interacted with her in a year prior to this thread. Our paths just don't cross much. So why is she making such a "big deal" out of my questioning the foul behavior of some folks around here? Why should I be the one to be booted (as she suggests) instead of the trouble makers?
Maybe I am making more of a deal out of it than you or others might. Maybe the way I'm griping about it is distasteful to you and others.
But am I wrong? (my actual complaint, that is, not the way I'm complaining)

I know how you feel sometimes Brian, but the fact is, there is no web site, including your's that is so free and has such a wonderful layout and format.
I know you wish bopp would change things, more restricted, but no, please NO.
That is the reason we are all here, and not there.
One thing my Ex Wife taught me, and stuck in my mind, " Just be polite, even if you don't like them. or agree with them ".
This site will survive because of the beautiful people that attend. And they can see the beauty of this site.
It's really as simple as that.

or we could start by looking at the conversations if you can call them that on the Nat'l bd. The boys there do nothing but insult each other! In fact, it appears the only they get any attention is by way of insults, really badass insults at that.
There must be some way for a forum moderator to lay down some rules that somehow make it a more pleasant experience for all. Not just the folks who have one mindset and pretty much rule that board and probably others I don't visit.
Karen, if one looks at life as offensive, one will draw negative experiences into one's life. Not saying you personally do that but in my own experience, that has been true.

actually the number of unpleasant people here is small....it has in all the years I have been here only a minor issue now and then. This is really a fine little community forum.. as to community I mean a small group of folks who share a lot in common. I think some of them more intense stuff here that you I assume are complaining about Brian.... is related to the Divine Fire that began to come in March 14 and other spiritual pressures that are making some a little heady....
This forum simply as never needed the type of modding that GLP has always needed.... its really a pretty decent community here and its in fact my favorite forum other than my own.
