Subject: Picture organization & editing question

I'm frustrated after getting my computer back from a major crash. The tech took it upon himself to load Picasa so now my pictures are either jumbled, mis marked or lost.
Yes, I have 7 hard drives of backup but I'd been haphazard since the accident 3/12. Meanwhile be cautious about Costco email~in a brain-dead state I thoughtlessly opened a failed delivery notice. Apparently my computer was doing auto-update at the time and my OS was shredded, desktop was totally lost.

I had windows live, which was easy but did have issues. does anyone know of a good picture viewing, editing, organizing software that will let me copy and paste to a new file? I must be able to save the edit and the original....

I have several pic programs but find I use this free program most often...it's just quicker and easier to use for resizing pics, copying, adjusting color, etc.

I have photoshop and other software that I use for serious editing, etc., but irfanview fills most needs...

Thanks Grits, I used to use that on one of my older computers. I actually forgot it was still available to download. I remember that I could do just about anything with it but the amount of time and the crazy plug-in features drove me crazy. The last 3 years and this much faster computer I used Serif photo plus 5 for advanced stuff and windows live for the bulk of the day to day.
When I was doing the sports photography I'd easily shoot a couple of thousand a month so I'd just crop and drop them into an arles file to ftp off to the server.

All I know right now is that this Picasa is making me dizzy, LOL I need to pick my program, learn it well and stick to it-sigh.

Unfortunately, these software companies just don't stay static. I have to wrap my head around setting up my husband's new computer. It came with no software and he needs MS Word to open the docs sent to him. He is virtually computer illiterate so it is a push to get him used to something new. I loaded Libre office and Thunderbird mail but before I could sprain my arm patting myself on the back, he's complaining that his new mail loads at the bottom and he wants to see it on top. I can't figure out how to fix it....:(

Blaaa, I'm about ready to declare myself too old to learn anymorestuff.

Used Gimp years ago and found it awkward at best but it does have good tools for image edits. Pixelmator outscores that but it is only for Macs. I know you are a Mac guy. Unfortunately, I only have a win 7 PC.

Thank you for your suggestion though.
