I got rid of AVG a while back after having it for years for the same reason. It's the AVG, not the Firefox.
I have different security now and no problems...

Okay thanks Grits. In the thread, I wrote I got rid of AVG and put in Avira. Seems to be working good. I was thinking the firefox was goofing me up too so I installed Opera. I like it so far.

I'm having the SAME problem. Maybe there's a bogus AVG out there. Firefox is a mess lately. Installed Vipre antivirus and it's much better after reinstalling Firefox a hundred times. I'll shut up and read the rest below since I don't understand what's going on. It does seem there is some kind of sneaky 're-direct' going on in the background with Firefox, pages changing, etc. I cleaned one virus out already a Win32 Trojan. Another may be in the root..sigh. Gawd I hate badboy hackers- :/

pamela, I use AVG and Firefox and for the last several weeks (?)* I have had Firefox just gobble memory -- numbers increasing on Task Manager even when I'm not changing anything. (I freely admit that I regularly leave huge numbers of tabs open -- will take the 5th as to exactly how many!)
I have AVG scheduled to scan three evenings per week (could probably cut that down to one, since I think it's only found one virus in the 28 months I've had this PC). If I'm not on the PC at the scheduled time, AVG begins the scan the next time I get on the PC.
Anyway, I've noticed I tend to have the accumulating-Firefox-memory problem when AVG is running. Not always, but a lot.
I have no idea about the Verizon/wireless issue. =====
* I think an AVG update may have been involved. Firefox just updated and AVG hasn't run since then -- I'll know tomorrow, and if I remember will post here again.

Well, this evening's scan ran while I was elsewhere in the house, and didn't cause any problems.
If I remember, I'll report Monday night also.

THanks, seems my scans kick it off. I reduced them to a weekly scan and will see what that does.

Didn't have any crazily-increasing-memory problem at all with this evening's AVG scan.
This was the first scan (which I was paying attention to) since the recent FF update, and there were no problems. [There was also an AVG update earlier today.]
I know everybody loves Avira, but I've used AVG for zillions of years and it seems to do its job.
Good luck with Opera. I know nothing about it, but am too addicted to several FF add-ons to leave FF.

Opera is saving me from using so much data --using the firefox, ie firefox was using way too much and since I use verizon internet connection, I was going over my data useage. So this solved it for me. First time to try Avira and it seems to be okay. Have had no crashes since I changed it all.

I don't think so, it is acting like my new firefox upgrade and AVG and the internet connection w/verizon is goofing up somewhere.
