I'm thinking of treating myself to one or the other for Christmas.
Which do you think is better and why?

Care to elaborate? My daughter has the first kindle and the last version of the ipad. I was more impressed with the ipad, but the new version of kindle looks almost the same.

I have the samsung tab 2 (7 inch). It costs 250.00. It is about the same as the new kindle. For what you are going to use it for the samsung is great. It has front and back cameras, it has flash media ability, and works fine. You DO have to learn news ways to copy and paste and stuff like that.
My second choice was going to be the kindle fire. But now with the new kindle it would be the choice. Also Google has the new nexus tablet which is also close to the kindle and samsung. With the samsung I read books all day long. I get about 6 hours battery but it charges quickly. Typing is a new experience and a good spell checker has not been integrated as of yet. However each update it gets a little better. For email, web surf, stuff like that it works fine. Still not as easy as a laptop, you will have a learning curve.
My daughter has the 700.00 IPAD. It works for her as a college student, but doesn't do flash so she still has to have her laptop.
I highly recommend the samsung, and the new kindle has all the bells and whistles too. Save the money as all these tables will be outdated by next year and the tables will be a whole new animal by then.

That was the kind of information I was seeking.
I don't need a camera and the kindle doesn't have one so that's okay for me especially since it lowers the price. I'm thinking the new kindle is what I will probably buy. I mainly want it for book downloads (and trust me I keep Amazon in business...lol) and I think it will do the other stuff I need. From what I understand, it's harder to purchase books with iPad from Amazon, so probably better to just use their product.
Now I'm going to check out Samsung...lol
: )

Glad to be of help. I keep Amazon in business too! I buy all kinds of stuff. If you become a prime member you get free shipping from Amazon (not outside suppliers). I also order movies to rent.
Yep, the new Kindle should work for all your needs. I do enjoy my camera on my Samsung though. Also on my Samsung if you have a smart TV, it has an app where you can scroll the TV guide and change channels on your TV!!!!! Great for us because we no longer have cable and are using an Antenna. You don't get a TV guide when you use an Antenna. But changing the channels, is really cool!!!
Now that I have my Samsung tablet, I order kindle books all the time. For the Samsung, you just download the Kindle app, then you set up a Kindle account in Amazon. After that when you buy a book you just open your kindle app and go to settings and click sync, it pulls the book from your amazon account. Easy as pie. Then you read to your hearts desire. In the middle of reading, click out and check your email or go to Facebook, or Earthboppin, then click back and read some more. I love it.
