Hi All. Is anyone here running Ubuntu? I have been reading about it and wondered how it stacks up against windows 7. I'm not having any performance problems with windows 7 but I am a little nervous about malware and what have you. I'm now using Firefox 5.0. Can't really tell much difference between it and Firefox 4.0.1. I suspect the changes may be under the hood.
Please don't give me any links as I have read 100s of them. What I'm looking for is someone who is using it that can help me make up my mind. Thanks a bunch...Don

Hi, Don. I put Ubuntu on an older computer which I use from time to time. I like the fact that it updates itself much like Windows 7. I tend to rely on Windows 7 because of the multitude of drivers for all the sound and video cards. I haven't had any problem with malware on any of the computers I have. CCleaner helps. Haven't used anything for Ubuntu since if I want a program, I would get it from the Ubuntu site. If you have a newer computer, why not put both OSes on it and use dual boot.

Don, I use Ubuntu, Mac and Windows (XP, 7). Ubuntu works great. For apps, 95% of of my time on it is in Google Chrome or OpenOffice, or Google Docs. Never had a problem, virus, nothing for the 2-3 years I've been using it. If you have enough room the Ubuntu install can set up a dual boot PC. Go for it. You'll like it. It's fast!

I'm trying it because someone just totally trashed my pc, well not my pc, my dad's old pc. Ubuntu is great because Windows hooks are simply not there to give the turkeys access through the Internet. You can keep documents in Windows and use Ubuntu for the Internet.
After people posted that a link of mine caused them a virus, I took my pc in a little too late. I should've heeded everyone's warning here much quicker! It wasn't an obvious infection though so I thought I was all right. The tech said that some people got their computers trashed because of Internet buying they did but I doubt that. It's the usual looking for porn, terrorism word-du-jours, etc. God only knows what was on my dad's pc but I had a TON of regular pictures, all those geo and astro eye candy pics, LOL.
Turns out there was virus infection but it looks like it might be more than that, maybe even some memory damage (replaced also). Who knows, with all the web sites I peruse for fun in my great 'unemployment' period, on someone else's old pc, someone must've found something or it was just malicious good old boy fun for some jerk. I don't think it's a govt hack because they are said to be much slicker than this but it could be someone who has more pc power and permissions who is drag netting words and people on the Internet. Unless it's the police (who have to use the Internet to find the creeps)..the rest are all bastards or 'real WORMS' in training.
