My computer occasionally reboots itself. I ran an antivirus scan and it came up clean. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

I went to the system properties tab in Windows XP and took the check mark out of the automatically restart box. My computer has not rebooted itself since I did that last week.

memory leaks in poorly designed software can take up memory the system uses causing a crash. Some viruses also work to break in by first causing a memory leak. If you reinstall the XP os it may overwrite the virus (same for application sw). Some viruses hide in the root /boot sector files.

Run scandisk to look for bad sectors. Backup data. Maybe reinstall OS (and apps). Prelude to HD failure? Install 2nd disk alone and install OS on it. Then install 1st HD as a second drive (don't boot with it). Scan for difference between OS files using 'gdiff' or equivalent (unix) DOS batch file & cmds. Reboots when online? Maybe a virus installing itself -(needs to bypass admin lock by installing through DOS batch file pre-windows boot-up)? Turn into boat anchor- buy new one. Try a different AV scanner - some find what others don't. (Try eset NOD32).
