I live is a very rural high desert area and have seen first-hand both what off-grid and prepper living entails.

In short, if you don't have a lot of money, DON'T do it!

Second, if you do have the money and decide to do it, you will be working literally 80 hours a week planning, building, and then maintaining everything. There are way too many people looking to buy land here, but they've NO knowledge and NO skills for creating what they want.

Age: if one is in their 20's or 30's, then maybe it would be a good idea (given money and skills). If someone was in their 40's I wouldn't suggest it...because it will take a good many years to get everything working. And then, in later years they're still going to be working 80 hours a week. I know one gentleman, he's in his 80's and four years ago (!!!) purchased 40 acres of undeveloped land. Fortunately he's in excellent health, and he's relied heavily on a local landscaper for learning how to build greenhouses, plant an orchard, etc. However, there is a LOT this landscaper doesn't know, so he's inadvertently giving this gentleman bad advice.

Need a well? You'd better have at least $50,000 to have one put in. It's a seller's market.

If you buy undeveloped land, and opt to have utilities and other conveniences installed (and a graded road), you're looking at spending $100,000.

My (unsolicited!) advice? Stock up on heirloom seeds and learn how to grow food where you live NOW. The most important thing for the immediate future is having access to food. And don't buy heirloom seeds and then plant them in soil sold in stores; it's contaminated with toxic waste. There's a long standing loophole in toxic waste recycling: When toxic waste is shipped to a fertilizer company and mixed in with their fertilizer, the toxic waste ceases to exist! It disappears from "the books". Literally. Check with your local garden club (be aware, many folks do not know about this toxic fertilizer) for what to use for your plants. Or locate an organic farmer and get their advice.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but here's the thing: we're out of time.

If I may add one thing:

In your fortune for moving off grid, add enough for a
house & garage & storage that won't burn up, blow down,
collapse with snow, hail proof, at an elevation it
won't flood and thick enough bullets won't penetrate.

Anything short of monolithic done or similar copies, is
just asking for disaster, there is no affordable
insurance.

Millions are out of power now, no effective FEMA-thank
the Republicans-, no rescue. Plan for it.
