Vertical Gardening on a City Balcony ADAPT 2030 GSM Update
4/4/19
Knowing that we will need to transition to grow our own food in the near future, I have set up a vertical grow tube system and traditional grow beds on a south facing balcony in the middle of an Asian city. This urban garden is taking food growing to a mechanized level. Here is a progress update of what was accomplished after 30 days from no leafy greens to enough for each meal i a month and plants are not at full maturation yet.

But, these would need some sort of sunlight? And no
winters?

I saw that and hadn't clicked on it yet, thanks for posting, I sure want some ideas for food growing! I have some starts of basil and tomato plants already, am thinking of my green beans to grown in a long planter and grow up my iron bakers rack in the back yard...think I will go soak the seeds tonight and see if I can't get them started quickly.Am dying to plant an apple tree out back, need someone strong to dig a hole though...lol..this yard has nothing but weeds so anything I do has to improve it...:-)

Potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes comes to mind too. (Jerusalem artichokes are little tubers and full of goodness)
you can grow them like potatoes.
Just watched a really good video on Elderberry and its good health affects plus the 2nd one following about how to plant them, where to get the cuttings for them.

heres the video on how to plant them by the same guy in the first video who came out to their homestead and helped plant some there.

I planted 2 sunchoke plants several years ago. The nursery told me it
tasted like a cross between the best potatoe & artichoke you ever
ate.

I wish I liked them. They can really give painful intestines to some
people, me included. I can see why Native Americans could live off
them when food was low. It is like fast growing potatoes. Even
though I dig up all the tubers I can find a few times a year it now
takes the space of 4 rows. Ours grows at least 10’ high & probaby
close to 10’ wide & every tuber grows.

Put them someplace you don’t care if they take over.

Or keep mowing over them, allowing grass to intrude their space.
Worked for me.

Hi C, You just replied to my link which reads:
Read this before you plant Sunchokes(Jerusalem chokes)
Yes, says they are invasive and should be put into a large pot to control them. Also yes, it says it can cause stomach upsets, and gives reasons why and how to introduce yourself to them slowly.

thanks.

Pamela, yes I read your link. I also read up on them before planting
them thinking I could handle it & that it wouldn’t be a problem. Just
trying to let others know to take note from a personal perspective. ❤️
