especially the cities that were totally destroyed, where people's entire homes were washed away with only the foundation left and/or the people who were unable to leave and now are facing daily survival... brings to mind that no matter how well one is prepared for a survival situation with all sorts of 'stuff' and water and food and such, if all your 'stuff' is gone, and you haven't developed/acquired the actual skills and knowledge, your survival is in question.

I have word form a colleague that the situation down there is significantly worse than what the news/government is currently reporting. He didn't specify, but apparently has family down there.

In ways it reminds me of Hurricane Ike which hit Galveston in 2008...now I say that other things to consider regarding that I will try to remember to look up...(like bio hazard lab locations).
