Situational awareness is something that you need to practice and basically you can cultivate it by generally keeping tabs on your surroundings. This was drilled into me when I served in Special Ops.

You go at this like we are in the mmiddle of an war of some kind...and if we were, those attacking would indeed have weapons..such as guns. Most people killed these days are by gun fire, and then knives in one to one frontations. It helps to be with others you know,
awareness is better with two people then one, three is even better, but be aware that people are not as likely to be abducted with more then one person along...got an kid...keep your hands on him or her while wlaking in the store and in the parking lot. An nice shrill sounding whistle around your neck and neatly hidden unless needing to be heard helps also. Give the intruder time to leave before you sue it, so his first instinct won't be to silence you...and I still say built in cameras in your peruse for and ready shot of anyone approaching you is an good idea..
it records what you forget. There are now many different type of self defense classes out to help you stay safe..but take note most the time those in trouble offered an advantage of being alone, or they were with people as friends... they didn't really know.
So they are now globally come up with "coding words" for an woman or man...sounds like they are ordering an drink...when the bartender asks how you want your drink, If you say "neat" It means have someone walk me out to my car...if you say with Ice" that means...
I need security...and if you say another word...that means I need the police. Supposedly these instructions are listed in the women's bathroom..to help women to escape undiserable people that will not leave them alone But then again, going into an bar may be asking for trouble in some ways...always go with an group of women, and never leave without them as an group. You can have cocktails in restruarants, and your own house
which might be safer....I don't drink at all which perhaps helps, cause I never go into bars. People know that as an supervisor of my own department...when I referred to someone as an "good ole boy" and smiled...it means he is an "militant" type character. Usually an businessman that insists everything be done his way. In short stay away from him. Those drunk are
much harder to handle then those sober.
