Subject: FYI: How Prepared Are You???

I would think most of us have a little food put by for an emergency
but from what I've seen this week here I don't know. Not just for an
emergency but after the first of the year they're talking about goods
going up 2% & milk going up .40 a gallon. Would you be even a little
prepared for hyperinflation? It could Very easily happen seemly
overnight.

We had a tiny bit of snow & ice last week & it blows me away that I
heard of so many people I thought were prepared that didn't have
enough on hand to last 2-3 days. This afternoon I went to the store
for some items to make holiday cookies. We're having a nasty storm
& the store was packed. Many of the shelves were missing a lot or
out of things. What in the world are people going to do in a real
emergency? Prepare your car with a blanket, gallon of water, a little
tp & a snack. Tonight in Portland has been a nightmare. Mothers with
children in the cars stuck on freeways with hungry children. Stuck in
a snow storm, on a freeway with no extra food, water or blankets?
What happens if you run out of gas? People just don't believe it will
happen to them. Well it did here tonight.

I think there are a lot of people plan on getting to it, think it costs too
much or it's too overwhelming. It's okay but Please think ahead & try
to buy a couple cans of whatever you'll eat each time you grocery
shop. Just rotate them when you put them away.

I realize this may not be needed here but the people I know well that
were unprepared this week has really surprised/sadden me. I would
hate to think of anyone here in that situation. Sorry, this is the end of
my public service announcement.

My husband has been laid off one time too many in the
last 10-years. We always keep our shelves stocked. Gals
of water also. From food to cough syrup. We've got it
stock piled. TP and all paper products as well. Having
lived next door to a great Mormon family for 29-years
didn't hurt any either. We still stay in contact. So, you
might say we plan ahead for whatever comes down in life
as best we can. Wish all those people in Portland could
learn something from this last storm you just had. Kat

brought up wood for a couple of days. 5 degrees at five this morning and it's supposed to drop all day.  -17 tonight??? need to get out a jigsaw puzzle and keep busy on that today.  the feral cats came right to the bowl for food this morning. they have real shaggy coats this year so I suspect we will have a very cold winter.  I do have some supplies and I do have wood heat if we lose electricity for the furnace fans. chas

The cold you're having sounds brutal. It's 18 here & that's cold
enough for me. We also heat with wood. Our feral cat is starting to let
us pet it. It must have been around humans at one time. Blessings to
you both.

they keep the mice away pretty much but I wish they would help keep the rabbits away also. the baby feral cats have been coming around since they were small so they don't get to far away from me. they come about two feet from me when I feed them and they eat almost anything mary and I have leftovers of. that way I don't feel guilty from throwing away food. temp now is 0. its about noon here and supposed to be -17 tomorrow morning... got some more wood and split it. when its so cold like now the wood splits with one chop. chas

For Mike's bday we picked up a free cat ...he has been
wanting one for ever. Her name is Lucy. She's yellow
calico with white feet. She is an indoor cat. She plays
catch!!! And fetch!!!! Half dog maybe. Mike is very happy
can't ask for much more than that. I caved, it took me 13
years to get over having to leave our cat when we moved
from Boise, ID to here. Kristy found her a good home....
And life goes on...kat

We've never experienced it when its so cold that wood splits with one
chop. That's bitter cold. Be safe.

Yes, it's over-whelming the people that need help these days. In my younger days, people did for themselves during the summer for over winter or starved to death, as no one stepped in to try to help like they do these days. For the most part parents helped their kids out, but they sure did hear mom and dad say lay off having the babies until you can afford them also. They seriously meant it also. Same for letting the pets breed more offspring also.

It was minus 8 this morning and at 11AM MST it is minus 4 and still snowing out here on the plains of CO. Have about 4-inches of the white stuff on the ground.

Feral cats are in the garage with heated water and lots of food and litter boxes. One has come in the house and is on the chair by the wood stove that is going just fine and keeping the house warm.

We have a roast in the oven for dinner so that is helping keep the house warm and will make lots of food for a few days. If the power goes out I have an oven top for the wood stove we can finish cooking in. House smells so good right now.

All the batteries are charged from the solar system so if power goes out we will have light and some power to run a few small things. The generator will be used to run the pump to fill the tank then shut down until the tank needs filled again mostly for toilet flushes but if it is yellow let it mellow.

Drinking water is in large barrels and is filtered thru filters for tea and coffee and water.

So if you all can make it here there is a big roast for dinner about 4PM MST and a warm house.

Oh and veggies are growing on plant stands in the warm basement under solar LED lights so fresh salad will also be with dinner right from the indoor garden.

It sounds like heaven Leslie. Is your oven for the wood stove
attached or is it a portable one? Your place sounds amazing. Can
you post a picture of how you do your plants downstairs? We'll be
over for dinner.... lol.

My grandsons are here & we're going sledding out back in a few. My
granddaughter just got home from the hospital & I'm heading over to
help later. Blessing to you & yours.

It's a portable one that can go on top of the stove if needed. I should have bought a real cook/heat one way back when but didn't plan ahead and this works just fine when needed.

One of these days I will get around to posting some photos.

it is basically a homemade plant stand with a couple shelves and I went to LED lights as the big fluorescent ones burnt out. To replace the big gas tubes cost and besides they have hazardous material inside.

It's a balmy +12 now and I just got in from cleaning the truck windows then brushing the snow off the solar panels to make sure I have a good charge on the batteries just in case.

Only 'snowing' I will do is going out the 1-mile drive to where the mailboxes are for today's mail but I will wait until after 3PM to give the post guy/gal time to get around today.

Be careful out in the snow and cold.

WOW we just made +3 while I was typing. At least the sun is out so now I can get solar gain for heating.

House is passive solar.

Can't type, it was +1 when I went out and it went up to +3 but is now down to +2 so I don't think we will get much warmer.

And yes all are invited although just checked and dinner may be about 3PM as the roast is cooking a little faster than I expected.

That sounds and smells like my kind of house..but could never get there in time for the dinner...restocked my pantry with soups for over the next couple of months, but also added in Christmas Dinner cause we aren' tdone with the snow as yet...bought an small pot roast, bacon/ranch
scalloped potatoes, coleslaw, Orange cinnamon rolls, and an green salad also....I've been fairly good....I've had an plate of Christmas cookies here for nearly two weeks and is but looking barely touched. It seems like every other day this year..Christmas is such hell for me. Today I find out I can't find my credit card..and things are not working like I wanted on it also. Went to the bank and locked it down from useage by anyone....me included. My God I hate citi-bank they discriminate against women.... if they are married. Everything Must be done through the husband..not up to snuff on today's world.
I have absolutely no idea where to look fo rthis card, because I ususally after using them put them back in my purse. There are no charges on it, and I know I never made any on it either. Raining here now, most the snow is gone tonight already....looks like the curb drains are flowing fairly well also. I might make an green bean casserole instead of another green salad
to go with the pot roast here...the one I take out on
Christmas day will be more like an fritta without the taco shell and more like an side dish. She's making Ham. I'm kind of wavering between calling Christmas off as to my moods...my temper is pretty ballistic right now also...have given up doing what I wanted to do over Christmas. I'm now set up with wood stove...plenty of wood out back...fireplace upstairs...propane BBQ grill outside out back for the
oven or grilling....drink only bottled water..stocked up on five cases of it. Don' tworry much about the potty either...upstairs one would deal with gravity, but we have an port-a-potty out back under the covered patio also. I haven' thad garabe service for nearly 6 days though now. I bought over $150 dollars worth of Led lights last month when the first storm came rolling in, I have candles also...propane heaters...and 10 cylinders extra on propane tanks.
Soups..case of Beef with Barley...case chix noodle...
half an case of tomato..half an case of mushroom...two cases of chili...odds and ends of an small variety of
pasta mixes, rice and bean mixes, Ham and lentils,
corn chowder. Canned meat for sandwhiches...and lt of eggs also. Canned fruit....cannned veggies also. Crackers. Cheesess and yogurt. Lot of low calories
fruit drinks also...diet soda's. Instant Oatmeal. So I'm not to worried about the next two months passing by. REally having to watch my calories though...and
our Safeway store just started selling Bison meat.
much leaner meat then is hamburger. Go over to my sister's house then end of this week and we go to an big laundromat and wash all her big comforters for her also and get them dried. I bought her mix and match
at least three interchangeable bed linens and couple for her futon in the living room also. Part of her yearly Christmas gift. Have an Merry Christmas Leslie, it's been quite an year....will be glad when it's gone.
