Subject: Very cool story

The dearest friend of a friend of my family passed
away 18 months ago. She was so well loved in the
community and a real character...spent her life giving
to others and always had a twinkle in her eye. She
was 96 when she passed. I had the honor of meeting
her several times over the years and attended her
memorial.

As per instructions, she left her body to science.
She went to a group of 16 future doctors and forensic
scientists. One of the things they wanted when they
first received her was not only her medical records
but also her personal bio and possibly a picture of
her still in good health. Our family friend provided
those after all of us that knew her, put on paper all
the memories and stories we had of her.

Fast forward 18 months to last week. Our family
friend got a phone call...would she like to attend
the funeral of her dear friend? Wait...what?

This incredible group of 16 were going to honor
her for all the knowledge she gave them through
her final gift of giving. Her body. They had her
photo enlarged in their workplace and greeted her
every morning. They also thanked her daily and
addressed her by name. Through the stories we
provided...they got to know her before they received
her...her escape from Austria during the war (very
much like the Von Trapp family)...and eventually
landing on the east coast of Canada. Her wonderful
marriage and children...all who predeceased her.
Her devotion to children, the less fortunate and
fellow seniors...always with a backpack on her back,
with goodies she could give to others. She was so
tiny...just under 5 feet tall and had the most
amazingly piercing blue eyes, that were always dancing
with mirth and compassion. She could out-walk
anybody, even in her nineties and started many clubs
including language skills, dancing, music, discussion
groups and helping find students housing if they moved
into the community. ...and this group that honored her
knew all those stories.

So when they had used up every thing they could
possibly use...they then honored her with a funeral
that they all attended. So did our family friend.
She was so moved by these young people who were
grieving for HER dearest friend...who they had never
met, but who knew her more intimately both in life
and death like no other. Sent chills down my spine
when she called to relay the story...how 16 strangers
honored an incredible woman and who touched
all of us (and them) in such a strong and truly
inspirational way. Blessings to the woman who
gave so much and blessings to these incredible
young people who, I am sure, will be all the more
compassionate through their experiences of "knowing
her" and feel her spirit daily.

It's comforting to remember there are still a lot of real, whole human beings
