That's a hard disagree from me. To say it's wrong or
its right. it's my way or the highway. This is the
kind of thinking which has caused humans so much
grief. Compromise is necessary to get along. Rigidity
in many cases does not make for a favorable outcome.

I will agree there are a handful of tenets that seem
pretty universal. Would you care to explain why there
are no "shades of gray"

Yes, I'd have to agree. That's the value of a compass, and being willing to "course correct"... however, too many don't want to take the helm, and learn to discover what works, and what doesn't work. The dark and the light, the contrast, ...
Funny how gray has become such a big thing, 50 shades of gray, gray furniture, gray walls,... and more and more confusion.
Kind of like being a 'little bit pregnant'... gray statement.
Sounds nice, however, you're either pregnant or you aren't. Compasses seem to be less trending in the gray world of mass confusion. Trolls hide in fog... and of course fog is gray. LOL.
There is no dark switch,.. there is only light and the "resistance" to the light...
Electricity spells it out pretty easily. Put a "resistor" to dampen the light,... dark is simply the absence of light, figuratively and literally.

To see the world in black and white is to live
within the contours of extremism. This outlook
neatly divides the world into right versus wrong,
good versus evil, and yes versus no.

This thinking is dependent upon such words as always
and never. Especially in times of crisis, the black
and white worldview is looked upon as strength and
courage to the casual observer.

Black and white thinking makes up a good portion of
American cinema. It does not require much analysis
to determine who is the “good guy” and who is the
“bad guy.”

John Wayne, who is an American icon, made millions
portraying himself in myriad roles as a clear
thinking man of action. Wayne, the character, was
definitely a man who had little use for nuance; and
once a decision was made that was it.

America’s ongoing struggle with race is usually
summed up in black and white terms. Though appearing
to be the best choice in the short term, black and
white thinking can bring about long-term negative
consequences.

The problem with black and white thinking is that it
usually does battle in a world that is nuanced and
gray.

Cognitive analysis begins in black and white terms,
this is how children learn to use words and organize
their thoughts. How many parents have provided their
seven-year-old with a rule, only to later alter the
decree ever so slightly and have the child retort
with: “But you said?” In the world of Developmental
Psychology this is called primitive thinking.

As adults, we are prone to primitive thinking during
moments of crisis and stress. Mark Sichel, author
and psychotherapist, writes, “When the adult starts
relying on the words “always” or “never,” and seeing
the world in black and white terms, they are
slipping back to the way they saw the world as a
child.”

In the world of black and white we can become
overwhelmed with the desire to find “the” answer.
This is why church attendance grew across the
country immediately following 9/11—folks looking for
an answer, trying to understand the “why” question.

For all of the obvious short- term reasons to
embrace black and white thinking, there is definite
a downside.

Not only does black and white thinking show little
appreciation for the world of gray it has even less
for the concept of self-reflection. To self-reflect,
especially after a decision has been made, could
open one to the possibility of being wrong—which
defeats the purpose of black and white thinking.
Many psychologists maintain that black and white
thinking actually exasperates mental health issues
like depression and anxiety.

Black and white thinking is also flawed because it
inherently assumes a static world. It is dependent
upon everything and everyone maintaining the role
that such thinking has already preordained.

There is little regard for the human condition that
does not correspond to its beliefs, because black
and white thinking is rooted more toward the generic
than the situational. Failure becomes harder to
confront because one tends to place an inordinate
amount of energy being right. It is an unfortunate
default against the complexities of the world.

Our political leadership has been at its best when
those leaders have dared to enter into the world of
gray. Imagine how America would be different had
Washington, Lincoln, or Roosevelt maintained black
and white thinking throughout their respective wars.
Their greatness today is not measured simply by the
end result but also by their ability to adapt in
lieu of unsuspected challenges—some by their own
making.

It requires far less courage to live in the black
and white than it does to live in the gray. The
world of gray requires that we show up and be
present. It does not afford us the luxury of putting
life on automatic pilot.

Moreover, black and white thinking, though it may
provide momentary comfort, is simply unrealistic to
sustain. After all, even black and white photos come
with their own varying shades of gray.

Think of it this way, Sue/Seattle.

Binary system. 1 and 2. Computer language made simple. Writing code.

On-off-on-on-off-on-off-off....

Black and white.

The gray is never really there, it's an illusion fashioned by those who are the actual fearful ones.

Life gives ten billion clues every day. Micro clues. Micro choices. But, because most humans have decided to fill their minds with drivel, and distractions, and drugs, and more... and run at fast pace where it becomes a 'blur'... and things appear to be blended...
It is black and white... but one must pay attention first. Binary code in the computer is the wisdom and when it is sped up it appears as images and "shades of grey".... slow it down, it's simply on/off, 1 and 2.
Black and white. Slow down, and for one to reflect on life requires slowing down, first. And, few have the courage to reflect. Alcoholics don't just happen. A million black and white, on/off codes being swiftly and committedly ignored, blithely skipping down the fast road to a drunken stupor, and a trip to the hot seat at an AA meeting. It's not a disease,... it's a million choices made and congealing finally.
Otherwise how else does one end alcoholism and make it stick? By black and white decisions, finally accepted. Don't drink, period. Drink, you get drunk and risk addiction. Big things swing on small hinges, and it is black and white. Adults get it. And, sometimes it takes people a very, very long time and a lot of pain to finally accept being an adult. Swallow the drink or don't swallow it. Two outcomes. Black and white, binary codes speak simple and it isn't grey.
Do what works, and don't do what doesn't work.

What works one time may not work another time. This is
because life is not static. You can't seriously want
human kind reduced to a binary code.Artificial
intelligence is not something to strive for.

Whereas I don't entirely agree with the subject line,
"shades of gray are an illusion"... Black and White
"thinking" isn't bad, it is the primary normative way
of things, no matter the group or subdivision
thereof... and has been with Humanity since the
beginning, even before the obvious "binary" nature of
Christianity... but then so has Grey, although very
few truly understand it... in its modern usage by the
masses it's too often a source of bogging things down
and muddying the waters and nothing gets done because
of it, just look at our political landscape... in a
more Spiritual sense though, Grey takes on a far
different perspective, it's the Balance point between
Black and White, between Light and Dark, from that
place Balance one can see both ends of the natural
spectrum, and the positive and negative of Both,
realize both are within us all, and for reason too
because Both are needed to be whole... to discard one
for the other is to throw away half of what you are,
is to make yourself not whole and therefore not
understand yourself, Mother Earth, or the Cosmos in
which we live... to not understand the Truth...

Sue/Seattle, I know it sounds like that, it would seem. It is not about reducing it, it's about unveiling the simplicity of it. The desensitization of human connection to their divinity and source. Great masters know this. It isn't complex, and those who seek to keep the awareness as a secret matter love to couch it in a zillion ways. Why else does one need a go-between, if not believe one is not connected. The disconnect cannot grasp the simplicity if it believes complexity works. Fog and gray have something in common. They hide what is there. Grey and 50 shades of grey... why grey? Why not blue, or green,... or...
Why are walls in prisons grey? Do you think that is accidental? Hardly. Color is vibration.
I certainly do not reduce human kind to a binary code, it's the key that opens the doorway. Look at the world in general... step back and see what is staring at the confusion/discontent/warring/and drugging ever more increasing. Clarity is needed, but in the world of grey, it cannot happen. Anymore than moving in grey fog is capable of revealing a mountain crest.
It is no accident that grey is the trending color...
And, the sheep follow... because?
It is the very artificial intelligence that grey fashions... and no one stops long enough, goes to the highest hill above the fog.... to see.
The red pill and the blue pill... funny, no grey pill?

My rock fireplace looks gray...but when you turn on the light above it, you will see there are tiny bits
through out it look like flecks of Gold...the rock was quarried up at "Goat mountain" most likely, it also has an very soft kind of white wash over some areas of the rock. But in normal light it looks gray...it doesn't bother me in the least bit, cause I wouldn't agree to it being anything but it's natural self. I
have no issues of white or black with it either. To me it is an highly unusal fireplace made by someone that
had to have some thought behind how to place each and every rock in it....I can't say I've ever seen one like it before.

We know concrete is grey, and cinder blocks are concrete and they are grey, however color has a vibration unique to each color. We would not be able to see if each one did not vibrate at a different frequency. There is a reason that most people do not paint their walls black, all their furniture black, their toilets black.... imagine the bathroom all black, everything. How much wattage would one have to have in lights so you could see the nose hairs that need trimming as one looks into the mirror that is supposed to reflect the light? lol.
So, yes, there is natural grey, however the steering committee, promotes grey for deeper reasons, and those who understand vibrations push grey hard. Remember the humorous movie with a young Tom Hanks, and his "brain fog" as he sat under flickering florescent lights in a dark room of no color? And, then he was informed by a doctor, that he was suffering from a brain fog, in Joe Verses the Volcano. A cute comedy from his early years.
In color psychology, grey/gray ( depending on whether you are British spelling version)... is known in color psychology training, and Pantone is one of the steering committees, and fashion is another..... anyhow, anyway..... grey vibrates light, and compromise/compliance....
There's a reason McDonalds uses Red, and most restaurants use Red and Orange in their, logos, uniforms, etc. Red agitates and excites sectors of the brain, color vibration is no laughing matter to those in the think tanks in back rooms. Billions hang on it. Why grey? Look at the commercials on tv. Watching the toned down color schemes. For those of us who know, it is absolutely no accident.
Muted colors: Buy, comply, compromise, ... dull the sense, follow, buy, comply, compromise..
Add grey, mix enough black into any color on the color wheel and you get a toned down version with grey undertones. Follow the money.
Martha Stewart winds up in prison for stuff that most politicians do every hour of every work week... and she got a stiff sentence for doing nothing, really. And, out she exits from prison years later, and suddenly she is promoting 'grey', and grey toned pastels.... grey, grey, buy grey, use grey, ... buy, comply, compromise...
Add pills, depressive patients do not do well with grey walls, however prisoners in prisons are encouraged of course to comply and compromise. Add mental illness to the mix....
Nature gives us fog. Most people do not enjoy fog,...a little is good and fine for hunkering down and reading a novel on a grey an misty morning... however, a lot of grey is known to get humans to emit 'moaning' sounds, ... "when is the grey going to lift'.... Sherlock Holmes mysteries and murders always filmed in grey fog... grey hides things. And, grey does not reflect and diffuses light, just like a smoky forest fire.
Humans instinctively know on a subconscious level all about grey, however most humans herd rather easily, and want to be trendy, so they rush for the grey and slap it up on their walls, and don't even question... 'And so it goes, and so it goes...
As maliable as humans are, they are instructed that on Labor Day all colorful clothes should be packed away, wear no light blouses or slacks.... you must wear black now, and dark colors.. and humans just comply. It's something to watch how easily it is done...
Black was used for funerals....

I went to the paint store to see what color shades of Gray they have...I mean it's awesome, all kinds of colors are embedded in gray paint.for instance, yellow
If you want your gray to be happier, green if you want it more nature like, purple if you want it mystic and
an variation of about everything in between also. I would be truly surprisd if you can find an ordinary true Gray of its own these days. Even my kitty cat has an undercoat of reddish to her gray fur.
