Not sure if this has been discussed before or even if
this is the right board for it as I can find a reason
for it to be on science, wowwows or dreams board as
well.

I've been reading up on "chimeras" or genetic
"chimerism". I saw an article about how a couple had
a child and were having trouble conceiving for the
second time and opted for in vitro. A child was
conceived but upon routine blood testing after the
child was born, it turned out the husband was not the
father. Wanting to sue the in vitro clinic for a
possible mix up of sperm and the likelihood the wife
had been impregnated by a stranger, they approached
a genetic testing company for answers...after the
clinic confirmed they did not make a mistake.

Turns out, that the child did share some of his
father's dna...but only 25%. Obviously not possible.
Every person has 50% dna of each parent. In this
particular case however...that meant this child
had a 1/4 of his father's dna and that of his
uncle...that had never been born. It's called
"vanishing twin syndrome" where a twin simply
vanishes and is absorbed by the remaining zygot
somewhere in the first trimester of pregnancy. It's
not all that uncommon either as a study was done
back in the 90's and according to them, at LEAST
one out of every 8 single births are affected by
"vanishing twin syndrome" or chimerism.

So roughly 600-700 million people (possibly higher)
have absorbed their twin.

Perhaps this is the key for example for split
personalities, transgenderism etc.

Interesting to ponder for sure!

Also interesting
how a mixed race
couple can have
one twin that
looks white while
the other looks
black

Thank you Snodrop for this interesting concept & post!

I'd heard of this from a news investigation where a woman had given
birth to 2-3 children yet lab results said "She was NOT the mother"!
She was a chimera but it took so much investigating and a lot of
frustration to understand what was going on.

Another way of understanding this vanishing twin thing is people who
have 'extra' organs. Maybe the mother never knew she was carrying twins
originally and then gave birth to a single baby who was normal looking
but then had two sets of organs i.e. uterus's, kidneys, ovaries etc. That
would be the vanished twins' organs which tells that person they were
originally a twin.

It's weird and fascinating at the same time
Blessings, Jody
