This is a truly mind bending, and profoundly spiritual story... I don't want to go into it much as to spoil it, but there are some disturbing bits, imprisonment, experimentation, NDE's, the Otherside, and it runs the range of drama, mystery, sci/fi-fantasy and can be heartbreaking at times... I highly recommend it to all...
Video interview with Brit Marling, lead actress from The OA... interesting throughout, fan theories to the show, but listen at the 2:50 mark on... sigh/rolls eyes...
And, well sure, what with Gurdjieffian cultists pushing the "work" as much as they can... ;)
But as I've said before, even though he/they overword it to death, there's bound to be something of worth within it that's pulled from more traditional sources... as with most New Age/Spiritualist materials...
Still, I had to laugh when I watched the interview, and thought you would a chuckle or two as well...
I have to admit I'm curious as to the physical movement, essentially ritualized movement... especially in the show, it reminded me of tribal rituals of Indonesia... see link for a scene from an odd little movie called Baraka, and the Balinese Monkey Chant (starts about a minute in)...
Movement 11 - Lord Have Mercy Performance on 25 April 2010 in Gwangju/South Korea by Seekers of Truth. Dance no. 5 of 10. Visit http://cafe.daum.net/dharmameditation for more information (in Korean) . --------------------------------------------------------------- We don't claim this Gurdjieff Movement presentation to be complete and correct (if such a thing exists). It is not our intention to convey the correct way of performing a Gurdjieff Movement through the internet. Though the movements are extremely beautiful and designed with genius, their technicality is our second concern. For us they are a means to our primary concern, which is the inner process of the people performing them. For us Gurdjieff Movements are a means to be more conscious and aware, a technique of inner growth. If something touches the audience and some seed is planted in them, we are happy about that too. If anyone achieves to more than 20 sec of continuous self-awareness, that is wonderful. If anyone takes up the courage to strive for more than 30 sec on a daily basis, that is good enough to make our efforts worthwhile.

I’m not feeling it. The word that comes to mind as I watch this is CONFORM. Self awareness and presence can be cultivated through all kinds of movement, i.e. dance or yoga or not moving at all. One doesn’t need to perform a series of rigid movements to become sensitive or more self aware. I do like some of Gurdjieff's ideas I've gleaned from your posts, but this really makes me question the movement.

the dances are meant to convey information...they are not for "pleasure" or "artistic" expression...they were just another tool in gurdjieff's bag of tricks that were used to to accomplish the goal of the work...

Totally love the OA... ;)
Completely identify with The Work in all its various contexts and expressions, which run far beyond Gurdjieff's own excellent context and are, yet, quite *parallel* in value with it (IMHO)...
...ALL of which leave intimations of condescension and invalidation of the essence of these teachings...well, exactly where they belong; within the minds of the beholders... ;D
I've had the privilege of experiencing the amazingly powerful interactive Balinese Kecak/Baraka Monkey chant/dance in a group, with a facilitator who'd participated in it in Bali for years...and there's just no words for the state of being, the sanctity of unified loving consciousness generated...
...the core essence of it being that of SACRED, JOYOUS LAUGHTER along with the divine comedy ALL of this is...

“Profound and moving” really I found the series to be rather juvenile. The dance with hand movement and grunts that would effect the space-time continuum dimensions was ridiculous. It reminded me of a series (Are You Afraid Of The Dark) which my daughter watched as a kid. If one were to set-out to effect the space-time continuum I’m sure the effort would look more like mediation, not something that looked like some sort of voodoo dance.

But yes, I too at first, thought the "Movements" seemed ridiculous and really even are, especially to a modern civilized world frame of mind... one could easily consider it "voodoo"... but I think ultimately they were designed (for the story) to be jarring and even a bit silly, to get you the audience out of their comfort zone... if you can open yourself to it and not kneejerk dismiss it as being this that or the other thing, it creates a setting for greater emotional impact... Doctor Who often has the same element at play, silly as a path to a greater emotional impact...
If you haven't watched it, go back to my post with the Indonesian Monkey Chant ritual... it looks silly, primitive, "voodoo'ish"... but the amount of energy raised and channeled is obvious... just look in the old mans eyes... ;)
This is all strictly my opinion of course...

Brilliantly acted and written. What actually happened and what was fantasy? Supposedly, there will be another series. Hope so. I agree, give it a 9.5

not sure now.....lol....but I do that with lots of shows....watch them until finally I am 'done' with eiter the theme, the drama, the trauma, or 'who knows'...and then move onto something else that is maybe more upbeat for awhile, then go back to it...and others...sometimes things, 'so many' of them while interesting, just are so dark and show up in my dreams, (and I can handle a lot..lol) that I have to 'balance' things....:-).Sometimes I get frustrated with some shows that they never let anyone just be happy and have a good life, they (the writers) always need some drama to keep people interested in watching, but with so much happened in my life and friends lifes 'for real' that maybe I need to feel that maybe at least a few out here do get to have a happy life.....???...

That's just good storytelling... going back to the original stories, oral traditions of Pagan lore, legend, and myth, they all had there drama as a way to contrast to the ideal life... a story that's just "happy" throughout would be kinda boring, wouldn't it?...
I was going to be snarky and provide an example of a show you could watch for "happy" throughout but the closest I could get was 1950's television programming, but even the "Beav" was always getting into trouble of one kind or another to provide the "moral" to the story from "Ward" at the end sitting in his chair reading the newspaper and smoking his pipe, and the kids could say "Gosh dad, you're right"... even with "Opie" or "Barney Fife" it was the same so "Andy" could say "Well shucks..." and deliver the upbeat "moral" to the story... ;)
Back to The OA, it's only 8 episodes, and although there is drama and darkness throughout in the "flashback" scenes, the bright points are when the people she's gathered around her in the "present" start changing and doing good and right for others, other than a selfish reward for themselves...
