Now if we could make Personality passive—I say "if"—then impressions would fall on Essence which lies behind Personality. This would give us a great deal of force. Everything would look much fresher, much more brilliant, much more interesting. As we are mechanical, we cease to take in new impressions often at a very early stage in our lives. We take in simply the same impressions over and over again. We see everything in exactly the same way and we take one another in exactly the same way. Of course, if you can manage to see a person you know without any associations you will get a shock. You see a quite different person. In the same way, if we begin to see ourselves, if we can get behind ourselves through self-observation, we will again get a shock. We will realize we do not know ourselves and are quite different from what we thought. You remember the strange esoteric phrase in the Gospels, where Christ is talking about what is necessary for work on oneself. He is really speaking about the Person- ality. He says: "Whosoever shall not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child, he shall in no wise enter therein." (Luke XVIII 17). Here we must think about the idea of this Work—namely, becoming conscious.
I would like to speak about Personality—that is, the acquired part of us—and remind you of a few things. Everyone has this built-up Personality with its own view-points, likes and dislikes, customs, attitudes, and so on. Can any of you see that you have a machine of this kind and that what is you is not it? In each country quite different kinds of Personality have become ingrained. A Chinese is quite different from an Englishman. Yet each will take his Personality as absolute truth, absolute right. If you can catch a glimpse of what I mean it may help you to see what Personality is in yourself. Now, as was said, if Personality becomes more passive, impressions begin to fall on Essence. This makes it possible for Essence to grow—an extra- ordinary experience. As long as impressions fall on Personality they will always produce the same effects mechanically. But when they begin to fall on Essence everything is always new and far richer and more varied. In fact, everything is wonderful. Instead of having the feeling that everything is repeating itself, everything is the same, one begins to feel that nothing is ever the same. But one condition that is necessary is that one lives more in the moment and notices those forces coming at the moment and so takes in impressions from the actual moment. If one is always living in imagination or in the past this is impossible. When we are in the Personality and only react in set, stereotyped mechanical ways to every moment we soon feel a strange staleness, a deadness in ourselves. We are making no attempt to take in new im- pressions. We are really in a person that has been formed in us and that we think is ourself. The most interesting thing is that people say: "How can I think differently? How can I feel differently?" when this is the whole point of the Work. If you cannot observe how you react, then of course nothing can be changed. If you cannot or will not take in any new ideas, again, nothing can be changed. If you think that you can retain your former ways of thinking and feeling and estimating things and simply add something new to yourself as you are, then again you cannot change. It is you that has to change and you are just how you mechanically think and feel about everything. That is you. Have you then begun to observe this you, this person who thinks, feels and acts as always? Are you satisfied with this acquired you?

I'm okay with the confines of Reincarnation ;) Because that is what this post is all about..ONE LIFETIME of a SOUL. Personality is the sum total of our experiences yet colored by the society in which we exist in our lifetime. It's a Lens or filter our Soul shines through to learn and grow. We all decide prior to birth what we want to work on in our Personality, talent, career etc.. and that is all we see when we observe ourselves or society. It's only the tip of the Iceberg! The mechanics of it exist underneath and out of view so to debate something we have so little information on is 'pointless' --pretty much.
Also pointless is the judgement of our 'progress' in life, of self-judgement or that of another person deciding "WE" aren't doing as good as we could be doing! By the criteria I just posited, how would THEY know??? They don't and that ends this discussion :)
Only during your Life Review and discussions with your Guides/Masters on the Other Side do we even find out what we were here to learn this time and it could be something very simple like 'learning to be social'! Yet you'd never see that during your lifetime no matter how much you dissect your life! That is why contemplating your navel in philosophical discussion is usually 'circular' and goes nowhere... Our biggest "Ah Ha" moments occur spontaneously and they make the biggest impact on us and our lives. Blessings, Jody

I wish we knew what we were suppose to accomplish while we were here or at least get a nudge or a reinforcement that we have done something right when we accomplish one of the tasks. It would be a great tool for positive reinforcement.
I wonder if aliens on other planets have Life Reviews or enter into their lives with predetermined goals. Or if the angels in Heaven have a task list to do or if the idea of life reviews and predetermined lives is specific to us on Earth.

Raymond, you are doing what you came here to do! Yes already. You receive your positive reinforcement when you have done something kind for someone and a few days later somebody else suddenly helps YOU. There is positive and negative reinforcement happening to all of us every single day of our lives.
Let's say you stole something worth $20.00 from somebody. Within the next few weeks something worth $20.00 will be taken from YOU by a third person. Maybe someone breaks into your car for instance and what they take is exactly worth what you stole from another person. That is Karma...negative karma. Just like holding the door open for a person with disabilities, an elderly person or picking up something they dropped and handing it to them. You will have a favor done for you within minutes, hours or days. That is your positive reinforcement or Good Karma. This is a Quantum Physics Universe so what we put out is what is returned to us....just like a Boomerang.
Now, if you are paying attention, you'll notice that your behavior is causing these things to happen to you. Nothing is by chance or an accident. Thoughts are ELECTRIC and Emotions are MAGNETIC and you actually draw to yourself these situations. It's only when you stop the negative behavior that negative karma stops happening to you. So if you wish to have a better life, start being a better person to others and this will come back to you in many ways. That is Soul Growth.
Yes Aliens have Life Reviews too because they are SOULS just like us. You may have been an alien in a past life! Each life in this Universe is planned out before hand to make the most of the opportunity for growth. The mechanics of it are astronomical-- literally & figuratively ;)

Hi Jody,
I started taking what I term The Inward Journey in 1979 and after doing so and following up for many years it's apparent to me that from our perspective on planet Earth we are not given to see the whole of anything so while we think we can appreciate what this life is about we really can't see the big picture, nor are we intended to.
Recently I shared an experience I had many years ago with a friend and today I'll share it with you. In spirit I went to the other side to The Hall of Records where everything is cataloged. The building was of gray marble and monumentally huge and held an untold number of lock boxes. I was there to inquire about something other than relating to me, more like asking about the meaning of life or something along those lines.
I met with an ancient one, a man who was older than old, he had white hair and was wearing a white muslin gown and he took me to a box where the information I was seeking was held and he said, "Are you sure you really want to know? Because once I offer the information to you, you'll never think about things the way you do now and it will completely change your life."
It seemed an ominous warning and I declined the opportunity and have never had a moment of regret since doing so.
One could say we're simply here for the experience and given no two of us are exactly alike it means we can be appreciative of persons who have like-kind experience(s), but to each one's own.
Petra

Hi Petra,
Thank you for your beautiful post and I feel honored to hear your story!
By coincidence and I don't believe things are ever coincidence... Within the past 24 hours Petra I heard another person tell of their own offer of knowledge from an ancient elder with the exact same message you were given: "Are you sure you really want to know? Because once I offer the information to you, you'll never think about things the way you do now and it will completely change your life." It seemed an ominous warning and I declined the opportunity and have never had a moment of regret since doing so."
This other person is a male and he had the same reaction as you and 'declined' the offer--without regrets also. For me to hear this twice in 24hrs and I've never heard of this before, just blows my mind so I take it as a "Head's UP Jody" sign! Thank you Petra for this amazing post :) Blessings on your journey, Jody

Hi Jody,
That experience occurred sometime between 1979-1981 and it was something I don't think anyone could ever forget and I am astonished someone else had such an experience! That's amazing! And how odd is it that I shared it and you just so happened to read it?
After 30 years of hearing the woes of folks who had car accidents and the aftermath of such I realized there is no such thing as accidents or coincidences. We are all touched by experience and for those in accidents it affects all who are touched by it in one way or another.
To realize how people arrived in a nanosecond to be in place where something dramatic happens is interesting, yet it's also interesting as to how many people were delayed as to not be there such as dropping one's keys, receiving a phone call or anything else that occurred causing the delay makes the matter more compelling.
Presently we might imagine folks who were near the site of a bombing or mass shooting and hear them say, "Wow, I can't believe it, I was there just a minute or so before."
I take it life is a process of unfolding before us and we are not meant to know some things that would negate them by precognition.
So here's to the journey and whatever is derived from it.
Petra

Those were wild, thanks for sharing your stories, you two. I rarely post here lately, but I just wanted to add my experience.
One afternoon while napping when I was 3 or 4 I had a vivid dream of being with a wise, ancient man in a flowing robe with long white hair & beard. He was watching me from the shore as I swam out into the ocean. I won’t detail the dream which I still remember, but while dreaming and after I awoke, I knew that what I had experienced was a metaphor for what my life purpose was (even though I had no idea what a metaphor was). I knew the dream was that big and significant. I knew what my biggest challenge would be, in broad strokes, not specifically and I think the dream was meant to help me stay focused on it.
How’ve I done so far? I have no idea, lol, or maybe I do... probably too much ego & personality to see now.
I’m trying to relate this back to Bopp’s original post, but I think what it boils down in my experience, is that the most authentic guidance comes from within. The rest is filtered, diluted information.

Hi Akira,
Thanks for sharing your experience and I'm so glad you were able to remember it.
I remain uncertain if we have the ability to adequately assess our progress in the lives we live because our perception of how we appraise it may not be what we think it is.
However, as we live, we learn and in the end when we get to the other side we'll find out if we accomplished what we intended to and hopefully will have done no harm in the process.
Petra
