Subject: March 9th Balinese New Year 'Nyepi'

This years Nyepi which is regarded as the Hindu New Year is falling on March 9th as of the 1st day of month Kadasa.
Nyepi means silence and is a purification day. It is a regular holiday thruout Indonesia as all of the various religions are being treated equally. However the main celebrations are held of course on Bali, East Java and on the island where I live: Lombok 'The Sister Island of Bali'.
3 days ago the first celebrations took place. It is called Melasti. Sacred objects from temples are brought to sacred water places to clean nature.
The day before Nyepi named Tawur Kesanga huge self made statues of Bamboo and paper are carried out of villages. Those statues represent evil. They are lifted by 6 and more men and turned around to desorientate the evil spirits. At the end those ogoh ogoh are burned down. This has happened today.

So tomorrow starting 6am for 24 hrs silence will be practiced. Even nowadays nothing has changed this religious tradition and even busy Bali will stand still for a day. The Airport will be closed, there is no traffic on the streets, no walking, no activity on the beaches, restaurants will be closed ... total silence in prayers and meditation.
There are several rules:
- Amati lelanguan absolute silence, no talking, fasting, no entertainment
- Amati karya no working
- Amati geni no fire, no electricity = no light
- Amati lelungan no travelling, no leaving the house
With these rules evil spirits are being fooled as they think the places are isolated and non inhabbitated. This way they will not disturb and tempt the people with their evil intentions.

Ngembak Geni follows Nyepi after 24hrs of silence. The Hindus are visiting each others and ask for forgiveness.

Rahajeng nyanggra rahinan Nyepi 'Happy New Year'

Yes Anne I love Nyepi too. Most I like is Melasti as of healing of Mother Earth. Melasti is celebrated more often thruout the Balinese Year.
Bali has countless ceremonies. There are religious and traditional one's. And even life has changed a lot on the Island of the Gods the ceremonies haven't. They are taken very serious as you can read that even air traffic is closed for 24 hrs.
Big hug and you're always in my thoughts.
