each has a name and the one we call Jupiter was known to them as righteousness ... it has come close to our planet and has more influence on us now than at any time in recent history ... I have seen it at night the last few months and it is quite bright and I almost think I can see it spin along across the ecliptic from left to right as I face west ... is that the one? or is it another
Seems, given your description you are watching Venus.

The Moon and Venus will make a close approach, passing within 2°11' of each other. The Moon will be 4 days old.
The Moon will be at mag -10.5; and Venus will be at mag -4.2. Both objects will lie in the constellation Gemini.
They will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.
At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
