Strong Solar Flare and CME February 17, 2023 @ 20:10 UTC (UPDATED) A strong X2.2 solar flare (R3 Radio Blackout) was just observed and remains in progress at the time of this update. The flare itself was slow rising and peaked at 20:16 UTC (Feb 17). Imagery courtesy of SSO/AIA 193 shows a wave of plasma leaving the flare site which means a coronal mass ejection (CME) is likely. Furthermore, a Type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 2407 km/s was recorded. Although the region is not yet directly facing Earth, an Earth bound component could still be likely. This will only be confirmed once updated coronagraph imagery is available. More to follow regarding this developing story. ALERT: Type II Radio Emission Begin Time: 2023 Feb 17 1957 UTC Estimated Velocity: 2407 km/s
