If you have clear skies and a place to view, look for Aldebaran the star that marks the eye of the bull for a star marker in the Taurus constellation. For all of us around the world, the waxing gibbous moon will be near bright red Mars. And, for some, the moon will slide by – and maybe even cover – Mars. Astronomers call this event an occultation. The moon is said to occult Mars. In other words, it eclipses it, or covers it. Can’t see Mars near the moon on the night of January 30-31? It might be because you’re looking when Mars is behind the moon. The moon and Mars will be above the horizon – for all of us around the globe – at sundown on January 30. The occultation of Mars will begin at 4 UTC on January 31 (10 p.m. CST on January 30). The moon will pass in front of the red planet, as seen from parts of southern North America, Caribbean, northern South America and other areas, on the night of January 30-31.  The waxing gibbous moon occults Mars on the night of January 30-31, 2023, for parts of the globe including southern North America, the Caribbean, northern South America and other areas. Also look for the red star Aldebaran, fiery Eye of Taurus the Bull, nearby. And the eye-catching constellation Orion the Hunter will finish out the cosmic scene. LUNAR OCCULTATION ALERT: Tonight, Jan. 30-31, the Moon will pass directly in front of Mars, producing a lunar occultation visible across southern parts of the USA and all of Central America. Mars will vanish for as much as two hours with great photo-ops when it is near the edge of the Moon. The action begins at approximately 8:30 pm Pacific Time. Saw it last night...started on the west side of moon..ended up on the east side. Pretty cool. |

I did see it before the occultation, but I was so sleepy (unusual for me) I could not stay awake to watch it...that's awesome you saw it. |

yeah, I love to go out at night and contemplate the stars and planets. I live in a good place for it..very little light pollution in the mountains. I used to go to an astronomy club with my daughter and all the kids and the telescopes. It's kewl stuff. Think I still have her 8" Dobson telescope in the hall closet. |

Me too, I love star gazing contemplating. Only thing is where I am it was decent viewing until about 12 years ago or so when urban sprawl with light pollution revved into warp speed...while I still have an okay view, it's not as clear as it used to be. |
