A STRANGELY MAGNETIZED SUNSPOT: A new sunspot (provisionally numbered AR3088) is emerging in the sun's
southern hemisphere. Its magnetic field is not normal:

The sunspot, which didn't even exist yesterday, is inset in this Solar Dynamics Observatory map of magnetic
fields on the sun. According to Hale's Law, the magnetic poles of this southern sunspot should be arranged
+/-, that is, positive (+) on the left and negative (-) on the right. Instead, it is rotated 90 degrees;
positive (+) is on top and negative (-) is on the bottom.

This is a rare "perpendicular sunspot." Its magnetic poles are orthogonal to the sun's equator. What's going
on? Something unusual may be happening to the sun's magnetic dynamo beneath the surface where this sunspot is
growing. We'll keep an eye on AR3088 to see what happens next

that's the count so far on IMSAL. AR 3089 popped the largest - M7.2! Above is the latest STEREO AHEAD image. Phew, didn't expect this but had a sudden "jittery" feeling which is why I checked.

Solarham says this:

A very busy day on Friday with multiple events.
A coronal mass ejection (CME) is seen leaving the Sun in the latest coronagraph imagery courtesy of STEREO Ahead. This looks to be the result of an M-Flare around AR 3088 in the southwest quadrant beginning after 13:00 UTC. The solar X-Rays were declining following the M7/M5 flares around AR 3089 in the southeast when a rise to M3.6 was detected at 13:16 UTC. This could very well be at least partially related to this event. A wave of plasma is seen leaving this site in AIA 193 imagery confirming the source of the CME. It will likely be directed mostly away from Earth, however an update will be provided once Earth facing LASCO imagery is available.

whoa... been busy so far today with revved up energies,
utilizing it outside with yard work and excercise so not
surprised to see this as am feeling it and hoping not to
crash too hard. Thanks for the review sheila!

surreal, both sunspots popped M class flares at the same time! I read that the CME is from AR3088 so not earth directed but sure feeling it now.

There might be an X class flare coming earth directed if
it keep crackling.

it's 8:30, PDT here, just thought I'd check before heading off to bed and voila, it's from 3088 so not fully earth directed but think another CME with it, not sure yet. Just looked at STEREO, this is the latest image.
PS: Now 3089 has a beta, delta, gamma configuration and that sunspot is headed directed toward earth in a day or 2!

From solarham:

long duration solar flare measuring M4.8 was observed around AR 3088 peaking at 02:40 UTC (Aug 27). Imagery suggests that a coronal mass ejection (CME) will be associated. More to follow regarding any possible Earth directed component, however I would expect it to be directed mostly away from Earth. Stay tuned.

Isn't the new moon more influential for earthquakes than
other phases?
