Subject: Hurricane Hilary and the potential for seismic triggering |
|
|
I am a little surprised that this isn't a topic being discussed within seismic circles considering recently published papers have linked the flooding of the Coachella Valley and triggering along the southern most San Andreas fault.
I'd love to hear some of you weigh in, especially those with scientific backgrounds.
The wife and I recently purchased EQ insurance and I am glad we did now. We live very close to Briska Farms (less than 7 miles from the SAF). We are well prepared as I preach preparedness (father since I was young always talked about being ready for the next great quake).
We're prepared as much as we can be. This is a rare event and from the latest information Hilary's cone goes right through the Coachella Valley. The South Slopes of the Santa Rosa mountains are expected to get the most runoff and has the highest risk of flash flooding so we might be a little better off being closer to the San Gorgonio mountains. On the other hand, let's not forget our friend the San Jacinto Fault which has also been pretty quiet the last 30+ years.
Be safe everyone! Mike

Just to be clear, this was by no means a prediction.I was just curious as to other people's input on the topic.
It will be interesting to see why lies ahead.
Be safe al Mike

Subject: Hurricane And Earthquakes - Aug. 20, 2023 |

The following are opinions, not formally published information. If there is some published information that does not agree with these opinions, then people should put more trust in the publication.
FAULT ZONE STRAIN
If a fault zone is getting ready to fracture on its own, anything that adds some temporary or permanent strain to it might cause the approaching earthquake to be triggered.
These effects might also KEEP the earthquake from occurring when it might have on its own because they lead to strain being temporarily or permanently removed from the fault zone area.
So, the tremendous additional weight of storm surge water might add enough strain.
Friction drag between water moving in some direction because of the hurricane and the ocean floor might add enough strain.
Friction drag between the fast moving hurricane air and the land might add some strain.
The weight of unusually large amounts of rain on the ground might add some strain.
It should be easy to determine what could be taking place here and what is not by using the right equations and also by checking historical records of earthquakes in some area relative to the presence of a nearby hurricane.
VERY FEW SIGNALS
Very few high intensity EM Signals have been detected during the past few months. So if that approaching storm near the U.S. West Coast is causing some local fault zone to become unstable, its effects are not appearing with the forecasting method that I myself use.
Regards to all,
EQF

Its been discussed here for many years. Especially by Lowell Whiteside. And also some of our Earthsensitive/Groans people.
You can check this link out. He always runs days behind current events, but if you choose to save his link you can always find his comments on this and other related.

Hi Pamela,
Is that link to a Web site being maintained by Dr. Whiteside?
If so, is there a way to contact him?
I have been wondering for years where he disappeared to. I used to talk with him at length on another earthquake forum and by E-mail. Then he just seemed to vanish into thin air.
He apparently WAS keeping in touch with an earthquake researcher named Petra, now deceased.
He was or is in my opinion one of the relatively few scientists who specialize in earthquake research who actually believe that earthquakes can probably be predicted to some degree.
Roger and I developed a computer program that involved the use of his "ring" theory regarding earthquake occurrence times. Basically, the theory proposed that they could occur in certain areas to an increased degree if their fault zones were a certain distance from where a powerful earthquake recently occurred.
We were not able to spend enough time on testing that theory to see if our earthquake data agreed with it.
Roger and I also looked at earthquake occurrence times relative to underground nuclear tests. But we were not able to see any correlations with the data we were using.
Neither of those was a thorough study. We were just looking for easily spotted links.
Regards,
EQF

Before Petra passed, I got the link to his site from her and kept it ever since. I really don't know how to get a hold of him.

Hi Pamela,
Thanks for the information. It is quite helpful. Determining how to contact him should not be too difficult now that I know those details.
A note will likely eventually be posted here regarding whether or not the effort to contact him was successful.

Hi again Pamela,
So far I have not had any luck with determining how to contact Dr. Whiteside. Usually I am able to find people without too much trouble.
Other than his Web site he seems to have disappeared into the mist.
I was able to determine his age and will guess that he is officially retired.
There are some ways to possibly contact him by contacting his former employers or different universities that probably have him on their graduates lists. But trying to do that is a lot of trouble.
There is a lot of information on his Web site. In fact, there is so much that it appears to me to be difficult to get any useful and relevant information from all of his data.
He and another scientist did start a "for profit" earthquake forecasting company years ago.
It apparently ran into a few problems. I don't know how successful it might have been.
He and that other scientist applied for patents for their forecasting technologies. I don't know it they obtained any.
These are personal opinions.

Hi again Pamela,
As I stated, I am usually fairly good at finding people.
As of this time, I believe that I am getting closer and closer. With luck I might be able to contact him some time this week, perhaps as early as August 28, 2023.
This is a fairly important matter as I am attempting to contact and then get scientists around the world such as him talking with one another so that we can combine our precursor data and start generating accurate earthquake forecasts.
Back in 2007, Dr. Whiteside and one of his colleagues were apparently given a formal U.S. Patent related to their forecasting method.
I also now know what he looks like. This is not what I would have expected based on the conversations we had over the years.
These are personal opinions.
