Do any of you remember a guy who was adamant an earthquake would hit
around Fernley NV, between Reno and Fallen?

This was way back, and I remember he was trying to make people believe
this would happen. He may have even wrote many articles, maybe even a
book. He said it would be where all the fault lines, in the North, South , east
and west, disappear. Maybe a locked up area.

I wish I could remember his name, but I was just getting into this stuff at this
time.

I remember Cal, because I lived in Tahoe during a good size quake back
around 1997, and found syzygy.

Elephant here... Luke in Jupiter, FL? The dude who made
colorful maps and predicted major quakes
everywhere...said he was taking over Berkland's work?

We did have the Reno aggressive quake swarm in 2008.
Ended up a 4.5 (strong!) felt throughout NorCal in late
June. Scientists put boxes in residents'
backyards...folks called me freaking out because the
shallow quakes were scaring them/pets. Mayor said for
Reno to be prepared for the Big One.

I believe the swarm was linked to fracking in the
region. Once the folks connected to it were called a lot
-- the swarm fizzled.

OK. I finally have access to my archive of the old Earthwaves forum. I did some searching
and found a post in January 2003 referencing a website regarding a predicted big quake in
Fallon, NV.

The website was to promote a book proclaiming to have solved the mystery of earthquakes
in Nevada and predictions a series of large quakes.

The website was www.magma-quake.org but it is no longer there. However it is available on
the archive.org Wayback Machine.

The book is titled “The Amazing Magma-Quake Machine”, "which includes the story of the
development of the new technology, “Magma-Quake Technology,” and the predictions of large
earthquakes due to strike in Nevada within the last nine days of January 2003.
"

The predicted quakes were,

2003/01/24 (+/- 2 days 7.1 (+/- .2) near Fallon, NV
2003/01/24 (+/- 2 days) 7.3 (+/- .3) near Moses Mtn, NV
Approx. 4 days after the above date
7.7 (+/- .2) near Fallon, NV

Of course, this didn't happen.

Later archives of the website show the prediction became an 8.0 near January 22nd, 2004.

Of course, this didn't happen.

The author was one "Kenny Rogers" and the book was for sale for $214.

Wow Brian, good work...

This must be it, because I remember reading all about this when I was living
in Virginia City Highlands. I was there from 2000 to 2004.

Also during this time I witnessed seeing the Aurora Borealis to the north.
Bright red at first, then turned the sky white, in the dark of night. I even
called a friend who lived in Spanish Springs, above Reno, and asked him if
there was a fire up there. He was amazed and jumped into his jeep, and
drove north almost to Pyramid Lake. But of course it's hard to catch up to an
Aurora Borealis.

Thanks again for the information. And when these quake didn't occur, this
guy disappeared completely. But it doesn't mean a big quake won't happen
there in the future.

Jeff

"But it doesn't mean a big quake won't happen there in the future."

That's right. In spite of all the would be predictors efforts, the fact is
there is just so much that is not known about the inner workings of the Earth
with enough detail to understand what is going on down there.

It would be wonderful to predict large damaging quakes with a reasonable
degree of accuracy.

Perhaps someday we will gain the necessary information to make predictions.
Then again, that same information may explain why we will never be able to
predict quakes. There already is some evidence to that effect. It appears
that the nucleation process is chaotic, which implies an inherent
unpredictability to these events. Prediction may require a level of detail
of the crust that is simply unobtainable.

That doesn't mean there's no point in trying to learn more, though. Although
we may not be able to pinpoint time and location, further knowledge should
narrow down the windows we currently have. Forecasts like 90% in the next 30
years is pretty open. It might be nicer to be able to say 90% in the next
year. That would be far more tangible.

Yes, I do recall poster who was adamant about a quake in that particular area, but unfortunately I do not recall who it was. Sorry!

I was never on syzygy, but something about this story
kinda rings a bell.

I wonder if maybe there was discussion on Earthwaves. I
took it over years ago and it's not active much anymore.
I also installed new forum software. But I do have the
complete archive of the old chat board. Unfortunately I
don't have access to it easily due to several technical
issues.
