I don't think it's anything to worry about. North of Sicily is the Tyrrhenian basin, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Under this basin is a segment of the African plate deeply subducting under the Eurasian plate. The deepest quakes here are around 500km. The quake (I only see one) you mention is in line with this subducting slab. Below is a screen cap from the Quake3D visualization tool I have been developing. It shows all events in the USGS catalog in the region. Dot size represents magnitude while color represents depth. White represents 500km deep. Brian

...meaning of each color. As an aside, not to be Debby Downer, but I read an account of a man who had developed a tremendous computer program, only to have it usurped from him. He warned others doing something similar that they should instead go into a profession that someone else couldn't be able to steal their expertise. Not to mention the country, but we all know of the country which could give a shit about stealing patents, copyrights, etc. |

Well, considering the only copy of the program at the moment is on my computer, it's not likely anyone will be able to steal it. Yet. I've been giving thought to releasing the program to the public, but that's a long ways off. Still so much work to do before it's ready for that. In the mean time I'll just use it as a tool for discussions like these. And yes, one of the many things I need to add is a key to explain things like color coding. Brian |
