So, I've been looking at the catalog data I've
downloaded. Something I did was to count the number of
quakes by magnitude groups per year... How many 4s, 5s
6s, etc.... Magnitude bins by year.

I'm am seeing something odd for the number of 6s for
the years 1973 through 1982. There is about a 30% drop
compared to before and after those years. No other mag
group appears affected. Although 1973 appears to be
when the catalog starts getting much more data.

Could you do a similar check on your dataset? I know
you start at 1974. No need to go past 1990.

Brian;

No, I start at 1973, 4.5+

Yes, I'll do it, may take a day.

I'll post it here unless you want otherwise.

Here is fine.

I was checking this as a step in measuring completenesss
of the catalog.

What you are looking for is a sudden jump in mag 6
quakes starting in 1983.

In looking further back, mag 6 seems fine starting in 1950.
Except for this 1973 - 1982 period. Interestingly, the
total quake count jumps big time in 1973, more small
quakes. Also, a large number of quakes with no magnitude.
It may be all related.

You have 46 total mag 8 quakes.

I have only 33 for the same time span.

Including mag 9 only adds 2 more.

Are you sure of your code? Our numbers are similar but
don't match, ESPECIALLY on the high mags.

For example, year 2000. You have,

2000 8045 1345 153 16 4

Where I have

2000 3518 1335 145 14 1

I can see us differing a bit on low mags, but we should
match on the high mags.

On mag 4, I am limiting to mag 4.5, but I get 7972 if I
start at mag 4.

That's why I have over 3.6 million records.

We differ. But I see why.

How recent was your update? My database is from 3/5/20.

For example, you have but I do not,

2000, 7, 16, 3, 57, 45.56, -7.75, 150.92, 7.3,
10.0, 192

Looking at my raw CSV files, I have that quake listed
at 6.6 mag. It was updated on 1/3/20.

So, going back to the original question of magnitude
bins...

Do you need to update your catalog?

Skywise;

Are you saying the whole thing needs replacing?

I'm really not up to that.

Brian;

Didn't you say you had a way to get the whole NEIC
catalog automatically?

Ideally it would only get the quake info.

Reformatting that would be easy.

Brian;

I remember one year when someone was downloading the
catalog and selling copies.

The current Branch chief got really upset about it but
since the catalog is produced by tax funds, it's
public property.

Yes. I wrote a program that grabs it through the web
interface. I would have to do some more work to it to
make more usable for you. Right now it doesn't have a
good user interface.

Skywise

There's a danger here with big downloads.

NEIS could decide to take action against programs
which bypass the 20,000 quake limit, particularly if
it happens too often.

20,000 is about 3 months worth of 4.5+ quakes.

I hit that limit, too.

I studied the interface instructions and it's possible
to ask for how many records will be returned before hand.
That way I never try to ask for too much.

Typically the program only grabs one month at a time. If
too many are returned it drops down to one week at a
time. The only except is 1601-1899, which has less than
400 records anyway.

Skywise;

I just finished a program to reduce the huge neic
search output files to nice neat numerical quake
files.

I've been doing it by hand until now, a horrendous
job.

The program to do it is about a half page long.

Should have done it years ago.

Brian;

Reformatted by website but still readable

Part of the problem is that the world-wide web was
just getting started in 1973.

The count on small quakes is incomplete for that
reason.
