Last Friday my husband and I were an hour away from
home on our way to an appointment when we took turned
off the freeway onto a busy offramp.

In the middle of our lane was a medium sized dog and we
swerved to not hit it. Then she lifted her head.

We pulled the car over immediately and waved cars
around her. She got shakily to her feet, covered with
cuts, blood on her...and started to walk toward me.
Someone had just hit her and left her there.

Hubby picked her up and she didn't object, in fact gave
him a lick. We put her in our car on a towel and looked
for the nearest shelter..the county shelter was a half
mile away and had a veterinarian on duty and we drove
her straight there.

The vet came out and met us and took the dog to the
medical area in the back. We filled out paperwork with
the front staff and asked to be kept up to date on her
condition.

I heard from the shelter today that she has survived
and is recovering. They had to amputate part of her
tail, her eye is still a bit swollen and they're
watching it...but she's recovering well.

I have a friend that told me she would like to adopt
her when she's well enough to get out of the med ward
at the shelter.

I'm going down there later today to ck on her in
person. The shelter has named her Emily, and after a
week...no owner has come forward to claim her.

Just asking for prayers for her continued recovery,
that her injurires continue to heal and for her to get
a new home with a new loving owner who will take care
of her.

Been working on trying to find her a home (if she
survived) all week. A few more days and I think she'll
have one...but just would like some guardian angel
prayers for this little girl.

I visited her today at the shelter. The county covers
her care as it is the official county animal shelter,
they have taken good care of her.

In the last week they treated her cuts, they had to
amputate 1/3 of her tail due to the injury to it, and
her eye (swelling going down) is expected to recover
fully.

She's a little timid and slow to trust. Who can blame
her after what she's been through this week. Her vet
tech said that it took her a couple days to trust
her..and now she'll nuzzle her hand for more petting
after a week.

My friend will be back in town by sunday and hoping to
pick her up on Monday if all goes well. I talked to her
earlier and she said, "We'll warm her up".

The shelter only asks for the adoption fee ($85)..and
that covers her spay, vaccinations and license. We can
cover that.

It is good to remind people that love pets if they are
looking for somewhere to donate to, county shelters
deal with a lot and ask for little back.

There were 141 dogs and cats in the shelter today.

Went down with a friend who said she wanted to adopt
Emily..but when she got there, she changed her mind.

Emily was recovering extremely well, bright, chasing a
ball for us, asking to be pet and wagging.

I'm so disappointed. She is a 2 yr old young dog who
had one bad day. We are going to continue to look for
a forever home for this sweet girl. The shelter vet
told us that her time is limited if she stays there.
She has about 35 days left or will get the put to sleep
order as they're over crowded.

Will be calling up rescue orgs in our area to see if we
can at least move her to a no-kill rescue while we
continue to look for a home for her.

asking for another prayer.

We're in the process of applying to be her foster home.
We filed the papers yesterday with county animal
services. They have moved her to "foster hold".

She had been placed on a 24 hour put to sleep notice
due to extreme overcrowding at the shelter (her and 20
or 30 other dogs which other people are quickly trying
to rescue as well).

Once we get her here (involves an screening interview
and a final vet. sign off), we will have more time to
find her a home.

I now have two other rescue organizations advertising
here and also looking for a home for her.

She passed all her temperament tests this
weekend..wonderful with other dogs, plays,
affectionate, potty trained, handled easily..

She's in Kern county (animal services) if anyone knows
someone in this area that would like a 2yr wonderful
dog.

Well, we got her home and are her official foster home
until a forever home is found.

The vet at the shelter said she's picked up a "sniffle"
and has sent medicine home with her, and I have to keep
her isolated from our own pets until her symptoms
(sneezing) disappears.

Hubby got back last night with her (it's a long ride to
the shelter), and we set the crate in the back
rooms..set up water, food, fluffy bed and toys.

She wouldn't come out. So, we left her in the crate
with the door open until she decided to come out.

She didn't come out all night...she would take treats
from us by hand with a wary eye, but slept mostly and
would not come from her crate.

This morning, hubby got up early..treat in hand, and
spent some more time talking to her. He was able to
reach in and put a leash on her and encourage her out.
They went for a walk in the yard where she went potty
(we don't want exploding dogs) and followed him back in
and too a big drink of water.

Since then, he has been able to give her the medicine
hidden in a couple more treats, freely drinking water
and curled up at hubby's feet on her new fluffy bed.
She's now getting pets and licked his hand. She just
needed a moment. Trust needs to be earned.

I do have one lady who messaged me from a local soc.
media site, and said she very much wants to meet Emily
and would like to consider adopting her! I'm
encouraged we can find her a home, and now she has to
time to find it.

Emily had a visit from a prospective new forever home
parents.

A retired couple with an acre, two dogs and a lot of
kindness came to see her and if she would be right for
them. They had read her story on social media, had just
lost one of their own dogs a few months ago, and
looking to add one more back to their family.

The woman is disabled and in a wheelchair. Her husband
is abled-bodied. Emily greeted them both with
affection, interest and gentleness. The couple loved
her and were ready to take her home yesterday. Emily
showed no fear of the wheelchair.

Emily is on quarantine for another week until the
shelter vet releases her (she caught a mild sniffle at
the shelter), so I told the couple we would have to
check on the conditions of release and get back to
them.

This will give us a chance to give Emily some extra
training, too. As luck would have it, we train service
dogs. Now, a full certified service dog would need
months of training. That being said, we can give Emily
a few extra tricks to help her new mom and dad like
retrieving items for the woman on command. Closing a
door for her. These things could be taught very
quickly for around the house tasks.

I've also offered them a 6 wk obed class free (our
training club just started a session) to help them bond
and further train Emily to be the polite, sweet girl
she is...these would also help emily learn how to walk
nicely next to a wheelchair.

I think Emily and this family might be a wonderful
match.

Am going to discuss it with the Foster-dog coordinator
in a little bit.

And to think this dog was almost given up for dead
twice.

The main argument for both prospective adoptive homes
was that she pulls on the leash. Both were seniors who
weren't sure they could walk her like that.

So...We're doing leash training with her. We've been
doing it for 3 days now and she's walking like a lady
for us. We'll continue to work with her on leash,
recalls and sit/stay.

Otherwise, she's been so sweet and playful..doesn't rip
up things, loves to cuddle, gives kisses and she was
out playing with our Roscoe for the first time and they
had a blast in the dog yard. She gets along well with
other dogs. She's going to make some family an awesome
addition.

We have another adoptive home asking to meet Emily.
We'll have to see. My female alpha doesn't seem to
like Emily...female terrier mix. Emily plays well with
our young male dog. However, we have to keep Emily
separated because I don't want a "Highlander" terrier
bitch situation with our female (only one can
survive!).

Joy, our female is grumpy-she got rattlesnake bit last
week and is recovering. Don't need her jumping on the
new girl, and Emily deserves a home where everyone
(including the other dogs, if any) loves her, and she
is so affectionate...and her leash training is going
well. She comes when called, sits, stays (for a
minute..working on lengthening that) and is fairly
reliable walking nicely while on the training collar.
We have to go back to the shelter so the vet there can
recheck her and sign off on a clean bill of health.

Please keep her in your thoughts or prayers that she
finds her forever home soon.
