Subject: Blessings at Easter

When I was growing up, my church built a way too big beautiful opulent
sanctuary with a looming wall of stained glass that came from a Worlds
Fair and beautiful stone for the wall behind the altar from Italy, and
flooring from Greece. There were pews enough for 5 or 6 hundred people
with the organ and choir and overflow in the balcony.

Standing to the side of the altar stood a three story foot tall white cross
carved from stone. On Good Friday a group of deacons would slowly lower
a sheer black fabric from an attic doorway above, to completely cover the
cross and signify the death of Christ. It remained covered all through
Saturday. A solemn reminder of the sacrifice of God to man.

As we entered the sanctuary early Sunday morning, it was still, quiet. No
talking, no music. The only change was that below the draped cross were
hundreds of blooming Easter Lilies.

Then as the service was to start, the grand organ above struck a jubilant
chord and proceeded with the Hallelujah chorus, joined by the choir
standing next to the organ. It felt like the singing of angels from heaven.

And with a quick flick, the black veil was released and fell to the floor,
leaving the stark empty cross looming above us. It was quite a beautiful
moment between God and his children.

I no longer participate in formal religion. I have my own journey with my
own spiritual path. But I remember in spirit the feeling of joy as the
darkness was released to the light. And I remember being loved deeply
from the whole universe. May you each find this kind of love and
abundance of joy in your life. Happy Easter.
