Mammoth Lakes Police Department officers shot and killed a man Tuesday after the man was allegedly throwing rocks at passing cars near the town library, according to a Friday afternoon news release.

Officers were called to the Mammoth Lakes branch of the Mono County library at about 11:40 a.m. on March 4 for reports of a man throwing rocks at vehicles, the release said. When officers arrived, they found Jesus Corona Uribe “armed with multiple rocks.” According to the release, Uribe refused to comply with commands.

Uribe then allegedly “ran toward the officers while still holding the rocks,” which prompted the shooting, the release said. The release did not say how many shots were fired, who fired the shots or whether officers attempted to use any other less-lethal methods to subdue Uribe.

Uribe, who was 39 and lived in Mammoth Lakes, was pronounced dead at the local hospital, the news release said.

Mammoth Lakes is a small resort community in the Eastern Sierra that is anchored by the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, one of the biggest ski areas in North America.

Mammoth Lakes police Chief Dan Casabian declined to provide more information about the shooter in an interview with SFGATE, but did say that a body-worn video would likely be released in the next two weeks. Casabian said this was the first shooting involving police since the police department was incorporated in 1986.

The California Department of Justice is now investigating the killing as required by state law anytime a member of law enforcement kills an unarmed person.
