CNN contributor takes back Cheney ‘firing squad’ quip: ‘I was wrong’

BY ASHLEIGH FIELDS - 11/01/24 3:13 PM ET

Political analyst Jonah Goldberg retracted comments made during a
Friday CNN appearance in response to former President Trump’s criticism
of former Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-Wyo.) foreign policy.

“This morning on CNN I referred to Trump’s ‘rifles’ quote as him
advocating a ‘firing squad’ for Liz Cheney. I was reacting in haste to what
were objectively appalling and irresponsible comments that had been
framed in the set-up piece in the context of previous statements Trump
made about shooting protestors and having generals ‘executed,’”
Goldberg wrote in a statement posted to the social platform X.

He added that his comments were “wrong” and did not encompass the
true meaning of the former president’s remarks.
“Trump was making – albeit in his customary fashion – a different
argument about Cheney’s alleged foreign policy views and the use of
force,” Goldberg stated. “I let my disgust at Trump’s comments get the
better of me as this was the first time I’d heard them.”

“I regret the initial comment because it was inaccurate and contributed to
the kind of overheated environment Trump thrives on,” he continued.
“Trump’s words were bad enough.”

The Republican nominee labeled Cheney a “radical war hawk” on
Thursday.

“Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her,
OK. Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained
on her face,” Trump said. “You know, they’re all war hawks when they’re
sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, ‘oh, gee, we’ll, let’s send —
let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.’”

He faced immediate backlash for the violent language.

Later, the Trump campaign clarified the public comments, which were
made at a fireside chat with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in
Arizona.

“President Trump is 100% correct that warmongers like Liz Cheney are
very quick to start wars and send other Americans to fight them, rather
than go into combat themselves. This is the continuation of the latest fake
media outrage days before the election in a blatant attempt to interfere on
behalf of Kamala Harris,” said Karoline Leavitt, Trump campaign national
press secretary.

Cheney also responded through a post on X comparing Trump’s rhetoric
to a “dictator.”

“This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who
speak against them with death,” Cheney said. “We cannot entrust our
country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who
wants to be a tyrant. #Womenwillnotbesilenced #VoteKamala.”

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and once the
third-ranking House Republican, is one of the highest-profile GOP figures
to endorse and campaign for the Harris-Walz ticket.

"with nine barrels shooting at her,"

If someone who has the power of causing other's to take violent action in their
stead said that about me I would interpret it to mean they were suggestion to
their violent followers that I should be shot.

How could you possibly interpret it otherwise?

why interpret it? why not just go with what he said? a person would have
to either be an idiot or extremely dishonest to claim “Trump literally puts
out a contract on Liz’s life”

here is the actual quote again. the same could be said about a war hawk
like you who constantly promotes foreign wars while sitting safely on your
island

“Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her,
OK. Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained
on her face,” Trump said. “You know, they’re all war hawks when they’re
sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, ‘oh, gee, we’ll, let’s send —
let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.’”

"why interpret it?"

Full Headline: Arizona's top prosecutor investigating Trump's comments
about Cheney as possible death threat

PHOENIX — Arizona's top prosecutor tells 12News she is investigating
whether Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump violated state law
by making a "death threat" against former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney during
remarks Thursday night at an event in Glendale.

"I have already asked my criminal division chief to start looking at that
statement, analyzing it for whether it qualifies as a death threat under
Arizona's laws," Attorney General Mayes, a first-term Democrat, said during
Friday's taping of "Sunday Square Off."

"I'm not prepared now to say whether it was or it wasn't, but it is not helpful
as we prepare for our election and as we try to make sure that we keep the
peace at our polling places and in our state."

Trump was interviewed Thursday night by former Fox TV host Tucker
Carlson at an arena event in Glendale.

Here's what Trump said:

"She's a radical war hawk. Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine
barrels shooting at her, OK? Let's see how she feels about it, you know,
when the guns are trained on her face."

The "nine barrels" comment has been interpreted as suggesting Cheney
could face a firing squad.

"This is how dictators destroy free nations," Cheney said Friday in a
statement on social media. "They threaten those who speak against them
with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty,
vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant."

Under Arizona law, threatening or intimidating a person is illegal. It can be
charged as a Class 1 misdemeanor or Class 6 felony.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt responded: "This is just a
desperate attempt to help out Kamala Harris’ failing campaign.”

exactly! why interpret it. it is pretty obvious some dishonest people are
trying to interpret that as a firing squad which is absurd. probably one of
the tv talking heads started that shit which sounds like people are
getting desperate. ever hear someone standing in front of a firing squad
with a rifle? lol

reminds me of the idiots last spring who tried to claim trump’s economic
bloodbath remark was a violent threat

Exact words transcribed from Trump:

"Let's put her with the rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at
her," Trump said. "OK, let's see how she feels about it. You know, when
the guns are trained on her face."

Guns are plural.
Standing there with guns trained at her face.
At least nine barrels trained at her face.

This is an honest rendering of Trump’s words.

Heynow, etc.! Nice to see you again..

The point, which I believe OT is avoiding.. it the three words..

"shooting at her"

That's a dog whistle for sure.. he put out a contract on her life. That's legally
terroristic threatening.

Hi ao. Just popped in a bit.

You are correct. The exact words cannot be made unthreatening. The
intent is clear. I hear Cheney, who already had to up her guard detail, had
to further engage more protection.

Words matter. Exact words matter. OT has to try to distract because there
is no way to get around Trump’s violent spoken desires. Unlike many
honorable republicans, OT keeps working from Trump’s coattails.
OT does, however, know how to hold his nose.

that isn’t completely what he said. words matter and when all the words
are repeated it is clear he was talking about war hawks in a combat
zone and not a firing squad. the sad thing is there are journalists trying to
convince gullible people trump was talking about a firing squad lol

“Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her,
OK. Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained

You’re screaming words matter but don’t give a shit about the vile words
that come out of trumps mouth.. you whined when trump claimed words
matter after he ‘got shot’ saying it was the Dems fault for calling him a
threat to democracy but you NEVER say a word as Trump spews vile
words day after day.. tells his followers to shoot someone and you stick
your head up your ass and whine words matter.

You’re sick OT. You are a threat to democracy.
