Harris lead narrows to 1 point over Trump in national poll

BY TARA SUTER 10/30/24 08:17 AM ET

Vice President Harris has a razor-thin lead over former President Trump
nationally, according to a new poll.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey, released Tuesday, shows Harris with 44
percent support compared to Trump’s 43 percent. Her lead has “steadily
shrunk” since last month, pollsters wrote, pointing to a separate survey
from earlier this month that showed her up by 2 points.

The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s polling average also shows a downturn for the
Democratic nominee. With less than a week until Election Day, Harris is
leading Trump by less than 1 point — 48.6 percent to 47.9 percent.

Survey respondents pointed to the economy and jobs as the top priority
heading into the election, with 26 percent saying as much. Trump brought
in 47 percent support compared to Harris’s 37 percent when voters were
asked who could best handle the issue.

The numbers come as Democrats have shown frustration with the vice
president over her not doing more to tout her economic message, despite
many voters listing the issue as most important.

Other issues voters listed as “most pressing” were political extremism (24
percent) and immigration (18 percent).

The former president also had an edge on the issue of immigration, with
48 percent of voters saying his approach would be best, compared to 33
percent who said the same of Harris, the data shows.

The vice president had a slight lead on combatting political extremism —
and threats to democracy — with 40 percent backing her over Trump’s 38
percent.

Harris has heavily emphasized the former president’s role in the Jan. 6,
2021, attack on the Capitol in her campaign remarks. She gave a speech,
largely considered closing arguments against Trump, Tuesday from the
Ellipse in Washington — the same spot Trump spoke ahead of the riots.

The former president also held a high-profile campaign event Sunday at
Madison Square Garden in New York City. The rally was filled with
controversy and criticism, after a guest comedian received backlash for
attacking Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage.” The Trump
campaign has sought to distance itself from the remarks, with the former
president largely brushing off the comments.

Both party nominees have just days to win over voters in the critical
battleground states.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted Oct. 24-27 among 1,150 people —
including 975 registered voters — and has a margin of error of 3
percentage points.

...moving on...

But, I want you to actually pay attention to the
differences in your polls today, and what actually
happens next week.

Like, really pay attention.

OT seemed to miss this article on the Hill:

Half of Gen Z voters say they’ve lied about their
votes: Survey
Story by Tara Suter • 3h • 1 min read

Half of Generation Z’s voters said they have lied about
their votes, according to a new Axios Vibes survey by
The Harris Poll.

Among the Gen Z voters in the survey, 48 percent said
they had previously “lied to” those with whom they are
close about which candidates received their votes; 23
percent of all registered voters said they had
previously done the same.

The survey took place Oct. 22-24, only a few weeks out
from Election Day, which will follow a chaotic and
heavily polarized campaign season. The 2024 general
election brings with it multiple key Senate and House
races, as well as a heated competition for the
presidency between former President Trump and Vice
President Harris.

In the Axios and Harris survey, 22 percent of the
registered voters said they might “lie about” the
candidates they cast their ballot “for in the 2024
election to someone close,” while 78 percent said they
wouldn’t.

The intense polarization this election cycle might
result in some staying quiet or lying on the topic of
their political beliefs when around friends and family.

Harris and Trump are only separated by 0.6 points in an
average of polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ.

The Axios Vibes survey featured 1,858 registered voters
and a 2.6 percentage point margin of error.

don’t think she ever has a real point. we all know polls are notoriously
unreliable but before the election they are all we have which is why all the
media is conducting and writing about polls

I wouldn't give it too much weight either, they could
be lying about their answer to the hill/Axios, too LOL.

Which is sort of my point.

The actual votes are the only poll that matters.

Got a call from a family member in Oklahoma. After
talking about family stuff, they mentioned they went
as a group and voted. Early walk-in voting just opened.
One of our republican family members there (a woman),
was undecided for sometime but finally cast her vote
for Harris in the end.

Our male family member..also Harris.

She's is a very christian-right, veteran family type of
voter. I was afraid to ask lol, but I was delighted to
hear her decision. She had voted for Trump in the last
two elections.

She has daughters. She just couldn't stomach Trump one
more time.

anecdotal, yes, but I'm hearing many anecdotes like
this from many.
